Squirrel season opened a week ago, but I woke up sick last Saturday so I didn't go. Feeling much better this weekend, I got some of my equipment together to go squirrel hunting. I saw a few early on, but they didn't stick around. After hearing one of them munching on acorns, I sneaked toward it and saw it moving toward me. I could tell it was a fox squirrel, so when it stopped I quickly took aim and fired my Ruger. One fox squirrel for me, my first one ever. After retrieving the fox squirrel, I tried to go after another fox squirrel, but I missed it. Then, I saw a gray squirrel to my right. It jumped onto a thin limb, hanging only by its front paws. I shot him before he could hoist himself back up. Having likely scared off most of the squirrels in the first area, I crossed a creek and moved to another area. I counted about a dozen, but only one gray squirrel stopped long enough for a shot. My season's off to a great start.

Congratulations on a good start. The fox squirrels are the predominate species here.

How'd you like cleaning the fox? The skin of ours are like glue. Not good on old, arthritic hands. I tend to avoid the and concentrate on greys. Consider a can and CCI subsonic segmented HPs for your Ruger. Squirrels won't hear you. I've killed up to 4 in one spot without moving. The bullet hitting the squirrel makes more noise than the gun. Congradulations on your success.

Congrats Chance. I really like squirrel hunting. Its great fun. Every one is a trophy. I like your Ruger rig. Perfect for small game. PA does not allow autoloaders. I use a S&W K22 with a 4x scope for squirrels. Keep up the great work.

Congrats! Less than a month before I can get after 'em. Doc speaks the truth! Nothing like caning squirrels; hearing that nogin thump....it's awesome!
It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

Thanks guys! How'd you like cleaning the fox? The skin of ours are like glue. Not good on old, arthritic hands. I tend to avoid the and concentrate on greys. Actually, I just wrapped that one up and put it in the freezer. I've always wanted to get a fox squirrel mounted since they're fairly hard to find around here.

Chance When you look at a fox squirrel thru the scope and it has a grizzled grey head and grey front legs, leave him in the tree. He is ooolllddd and so tough you can't skin him. You will pull him into trying .You can boil him for a day and he is still tough. Them little greys though, rolled in seasoned flour, fried golden brown, with some taters, greenbeans and biscuits are a meal fit for a king !!!!!!!

Super! Congrats.! Squirrel season opens next weekend for me and I'll be out there. Looks like your Ruger is accurate, as is mine. I've been using a Contender recently but I just might have to bring out the Ruger now. Good show.

Congrats. Have you got any ideas for how to mount your fox squirrel? I have a lot of shed antlers and thought about having one holding a chewed up shed like he was eating on it.

I'm not quite sure yet. I have a few ideas, but I'll wait to see what the taxidermist thinks.
