In real hunting situations, how much difference is there between animals shot with a 50 cal handgun or a 475? Is there a animal size where you should go to the big 50's as a more suitable caliber? I am guessing no but, would like to hear your opinions.

Depends upon how you load 'em, and where you hit 'em. I've shot a couple of large bears, hogs, bull elk, South American water buffalo, and bison with the .475 L, and multiple bison, hogs and whitetail with the .500 WE. I would use either gun again on any of those animals with complete confidence.

The .475 is undeniably a big hammer for big animals, however, I prefer the .50s when animals start weighing over 1,000-lbs. As 500WE said, it depends on how you load 'em. I do think that all things being equal as far as velocity, bullet type/material, and similar shot placement, the .50s are a step up from the .475.

I completely agree with what my colleagues have said above but I just have to say if you want to see complete destruction of a critters vitals, load up a 325gr A-frame in a 50 cal. and make a broadside.

Quite impressive wound james, by chance do you have any pictures to compare with a 325 gr bullet from a 475 Linebaugh? FYI, I am not trying to keep anyone from getting a 50 cal. Actually the answer Max gave is pretty much what I was thinking. In my opinion a 357 mag is light for whitetail [this is only my opinion] and would always opt for more power. [ex. 357 Max on up] The 500 JRH is a revolver that really intrigues me. Recently, the new BFR with the bisley grip really has my attention. There very well could be one in my future.

I spoke to MR on the phone in late January about their custom offerings. They told me that the 475 Linebaugh and the 500 JRH would move out of the custom line to the factory line. I took delivery of my 7.5? BFR in 500 JRH two weeks ago. This one has the new style hammer and their new rubber grip. The cylinder is cut to accept the 500 S&W case head, due to continuous crap weather I?ve only shot it 2x with recently developed hand-loads using 500 S&W brass cut to JRH specs. More to come once I have a good weather day.

How does their Bis handle feel in the hand, Max?
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

45 Colt is my favorite, but the 500JRH is a close second. Great round, and AWESOME revolver there Max!
Congrats on that score!!

I'll find out this Thursday or Friday what an Lehigh Extreme Penetrator out of a 500 S&W Encore will do on a big boar 😉

My chief complaint -- keep in mind that I haven't tested these yet, is the fact that they are so light. Yes, you should be able to get some velocity out of them, but that's only a portion of the terminal equation. I have some of the .475 and .50 caliber bullets to test. The flat-nosed solids look like an LFN (Why do these companies all insist on such small meplats? That's a rhetorical question, no need to answer.)Might try them on bovine flesh some time this year.

Max, I've tested the bullet on the left in .454 Casull on groundhogs and deer. Nothing exciting, as you would expect, due to lack of resistance of the small animals. At least they are accurate. Don't know if I'd trust it on anything really big or dangerous.

funny, that bullet on the left was pretty excellent on deer out of a .357 mag. i would say i haven't used it on big stuff yet but it aint gonna do worse than standard flat points based on what i've seen thus far.

Here's my review of the 350 gr Extreme Penetrator Bullet from Lehigh...I used this bullet out of a T/C Encore with a SSK 12" Bull Barrel plus arrestor brake. On a steep uphill shot, this bullet penetrated from ham to neck...it looked like someone turned on a water hose amount of blood coming out the entrance wound...

On and for straight line penetration, I can definitely recommend this bullet. Plus, you can push it as fast as you'd like with no problems

very true. that penetration was on a very very big animal and you did a good job getting the angle that will give the longest tissue resistance. i think that maintaining nose profile and bullet integrity is far and away the most defining characteristic in penetration and we are probably dwelling a bit too much on grain weight.
