The other thread about how many calibers do you have? got me to thinking about some of the reasons, for 2 or more guns with the same caliber. Be it one black powder or whatever reason, what is your reason to have more than one gun in the same caliber?

I have a 4 5/8 barrel Ruger Bisley that I like very much for it's ease of "Packin" and it shoots good and with the majority of ammo, it is not bad to handle. But I do have a 5 1/2" barrel Bisley that has a taller sight that I only shoot heavy for caliber loads with it. It gets fed the 330 grain 350 and 365 gr fodder. With a minimum of clicks, or at different yardages, I can be OK to shoot any of the three loads. My other 45 is my Colt and that is of course, in a different class. It happens to be my favorite caliber besides.

I have a 22lr/22mag that I use, then I keep another single action 22lr that's just a cheap older German made one that I let the kids or friends shoot.

44 mag, I have a nice bird heads grip 3.75" barrel that's my favorite and makes a great packing gun, a 5.5" vaquero that's a good all around hunting or plinking gun, and then a S&W 629 6" ported and scoped gun for hunting.

45 colt, I have a blued NV I bought used that is pretty worn but it is probably one of my favorite guns so I won't sell it, it is just an fun and smooth shooter. But then I bought a convertible 45 colt/45 auto which looks a lot nicer but is just not as much fun to shoot and it may get sold soon.

357, I have a NV lipseys edition which I don't really care for, a Blackhawk convertible which is ok, but I am trying to get a S&W 686 6" factory ported to match my 629, which would be scoped and probably be my new coyote gun.

I don't have any two exactly the same in any caliber, but I could see that for a backup hunting gun or something.

The functionality of a handgun and its suitability for a certain task or situation goes far beyond its caliber. In fact I would expect the hard core handgunner to own more than one gun in their favorite caliber just for this reason. Additionally to quote Zee - "guns are cool". LOL...

In 44 Magnum I have a scoped 6" S&W 629, a Redhawk 7 1/2" with iron sights and a RSB Bisley 3 3/4" barrel belt gun. I also have a 44 Mag Contender barrel.

In 22 rimfire I have 2 S&W 17s - 1 scoped & 1 with irons. I also have a Ruger Mark II 7 1/2" with a removable red dot / irons. I probably should own a few more 22s but I haven't got there yet.

In 45 ACP I have a vintage Colt 1911 and a 5" S&W 625. Very different guns, same ammo.

I'd say versatility more than any other reason. I tend to shoot slow and fairly heavy .44 in my SBHH ... lighter and faster stuff in the Encore. Its a completely different shooting experience. .44 is just so easy to find good loads all over the spectrum.

I heard once or more that variety is the spice of life. That holds true with handguns. Different moods, or different applications,,, I don't need justifications. I have to agree with,, they are cool, and fun, and several are needed.
Thanks for your participation.

THIS!
The other reason for me besides the obvious above, is different features, weight, barrel length, etc...

In 44 I have a single load using H-110 and 240 grain XTP's. It shoots great out of my 5" Super Redhawk, my 12" Encore, and my 77/44 carbine. Makes life easier knowing I can switch from one to the other and not worry about having different loads.

It is easier to keep plenty of ammo on hand when more than one gun use the same load.

because some of us are dumb. yes you can put 44-40 in a speed loader for 44spl. they just will not fit into the cylinder when you try to use it. .43 Spanish will fit and should fire in a 45-70, though you should notice that, as the .43 Spanish is bottle necked. 41 mag will fire in a 44. the cases are a pain to get out. ( that one was only partly my fault. i ask for 44 mag. it was only after the first cylinder full that i looked at the box) and 16g will drop through the chamber of a 12g and stick in the barrel like someone welded it in place.

you can fix stupid it just takes some time.

Because I like guns and like shooting a variety and some have a different application or provide a different challenge.

I used to have a wide variety of rifles and handguns in multiple calibers. When our last pres was running for office, and the first gun craze was going on, I felt led to capitalize on the larger quantities of ammo I had and what would be easier to get. I had a handful of guns with only a few boxes of ammo and thought that having guns all in the same caliber would allow for better future endeavors if gun (or ammo) control would prevail. I sold a lot of rigs and focused on acquiring rifles and SP's in .308, .223, and .45-70 Govt and handguns in .40 S&W. My boys began to get to the age where they were getting guns and I did the same with them. I've kept that practice going and don't own anything outside those 4 calibers. Have enough ammo in each to supply my kids and I forever and reloading supplies for each as well.

I still feel that the next surge against our second amendment will come against ammo. If im wrong, then at least my kids and grandkids will have plenty to shoot once I'm gone....

I got to thinking about it, and the only cartridge of which I have two guns chambered is the 270 - my Weatherby Vanguard rifle and a 12" Encore barrel.

I have two sons and a daughter.
Right now I have several sets of guns that will minimize the squabbling when I die.
