Got my SBH Bisley in .480 Ruger out of Purgatory a couple weeks ago. Just been waiting on the front sight to come in and put her all together.

I changed out the factory grips for some Black Micarta ones I had on hand. The front sight is a Hi-Viz Fiber Optic.

She might be one of my new favorite hunting handguns!

I've ordered some 355gr LFN-GC bullets from Matt's Bullets. Hopefully, they will be here this week so I can get load development completed for deer hunting.

Good looking gun I like it. have you checked the throats on the cylinder? I have heard that a lot of them are .477 and .478
Just curios,,,

I would hope that if the .476 dia bullets are small, that they will obturate enough for you, and work well.

That does look like the Oregon Trail bullet, which is a good one. I get them over 1400fps out of the 7.5" SRH.

Made some test loads and hit the range today.

Hodgdon book max was listed as 27.0gr H110. So, I made the following:

355gr RF-GC Matt's Bullet
Starline Brass
CCI-300 Primers
1.632" COAL

26.5gr / 27.0gr / 27.5gr

My goal was 1,400 fps out of the 6.5" SBH.

Worked at 25yrds to give me the best determination as to which was the better load without human error envolved. Since I was using irons.

The first load was too slow and not accurate enough. The second was spot on in accuracy and just shy of my target velocity. The third load beat the speed at 1,414 fps but lost some of the accuracy. So, I think I'm going to go with the book max load of 27.0gr H110. It clocked 1,384 fps and grouped rather well.

Ain't nothing I'm likely to hunt I can't stop with that bullet at that speed. Gonna load up some more and try them further out next weekend or so.

The recoil is a little more brisk than I was expecting. But, amazingly, it is not bad to shoot. Pleasant even as compared to the .454 Casull in the same make gun. That sucker is painful. This one, has a decent muzzle rise but not much backwards recoil to cause pain. You just gotta hang onto the gun.

Kinda nice. I am rather pleased.

Those loads are pretty stout! Very cool! When do you intend to blood that fine revolver?

See,
I very recently took possession of a SRH in .480 Ruger and am prepping to start load development. (Dang Whitworth and his books!).

What does the "RF-GC" mean with regards the bullets you're using?

Thanks

Pat

Great shooting, as usual. I doubt there's anything on this continent that could remain standing after a well placed hit with those loads.

I ain't good enough to notice .1gr difference at a time.

I might try 27.3gr just to see if I hit 1,400 fps on the dot and have acceptable accuracy.

I did not mean to imply that the tweeking was for accuracy. Very few people can tell any difference on paper with .1 gr increments, even with a scoped rifle. The addition of tweeking would be exactly what you stated for,,, and that would be for velocity ( while watching for pressure) If you are throwing charges from a powder throw, then you wouldn't get to tweak much anyway. As you and most everyone here knows we have to work with weighed charges mostly if we are after that optimum load.
Many people use .5 increments or switch to .3 and let that be as low as they go. I almost hated to reply back to you since this is probably seed for high-jacking your thread. I hope that doesn't happen.
Actually I am very happy with the results you got so far with the bullets.

I use an RCBS Chargemaster for powder measuring. Even then, I mostly space my test loads at .5gr increments. Switching to .3gr if I want to fine tune or play around.

I tried .2gr increments once. A waste of bullets for me.

I am totally amazed that the Maximum Load was that close to your goal velocity.

Using most Manuals "Pick One" the powder charge listed never gets close to what is listed for velocity.

Great looking revolver by the way. The Grips really set it off. The Fiber Optic front sight will really help with those early and late shots.

Bob
