Don`t know if some of you younger members know who Skeeter Skelton was, so I`ll just leave it that he was a very popular gun writer.....I recently received a copy of Handgun Hunting by George Nonte and Lee Jurras that was signed to Skeeter, by Nonte, with the following.... "To border jumper Skeeter Skelton, a practicing pistolero, George C. Nonte".... I was in for a real surprise when I opened the book and found a typed letter that was with the book when sent to Skeeter.... I`ve scanned both and hope you can make them out.... PS- I was lucky enough to have Lee Jurras sign my copy that I had mailed to him before he passed...

JAMES: COOL, VERY COOL.

QUIZ: WHAT WAS SKEETER'S "IF I ONLY COULD HAVE 1" GUN? I THINK I REMEMBER.

Skeeter was/is my favorite.

45Man, 5" S&W Model 27. That was an excellent article with a lot of good thought put into it. The closest I could get was a 4" Mod. 28. But, it does wear a set of Bearhug Grips.

THE 5 INCH MODEL 27 WAS SKEETER'S FAVORITE REVOLVER. MANY YEARS AGO I GOT A GOOD DEAL ON 1 IN A PAWN SHOP, AND HAVE CARRIED IT A LOT BUT HAVE NEVER SHOT ANYTHING BUT SMALL CRITTERS WITH IT. A VERY ACCURATE GUN. YOU WOULD BE SURPRISED WHAT AN XTRA INCH OF BARREL DOES FOR YOUR SHOOTING.

Skeeter also had a soft spot for the .45 Colt.He was the prime mover in my decision to get my first Ruger in .45 Colt. A decision I have never regretted over the last 40 odd years. Loved his writing and still do!

I'm reminded of one I passed on probably 15yrs ago or more. It was a 5" pre-27 with the beautifully checkered topstrap. Overall, it probably had half its finish worn off and was priced a little higher than I was comfortable with. Sorta made up for it later with this freckled 6" 27-2 and then a 4" Highway Patrolman but always regret not snagging the 5".

45 Man, you may remember Skeeter telling of appearing in Court one day when his coat pulled away as he was passing in front of the Judge to testify, thus revealing his 5" 27. The Judge said "Mr. Sheriff, that is the biggest gun I have ever seen", to resounding laughter.

500WE: I ALSO THOUHT IT WAS DOBIE GRANT, NOT GRAY, A CHARACTER BASED ON COL. EVAN QUIROS, WHO RODE AROUND HIS SOUTH TEXAS RANCH WITH AN 8 3/8ths MODEL 29 ON THE SEAT NEXT TO HIM. ALWAYS LOOKED FORWARD TO SKEETER'S WRITINGS IN SHOOTING TIMES. EVEN IF MY LIFE DEPENDED ON IT, SORRY I COULD NOT TELL YOU WHO WRITES IN SHOOTING TIMES TODAY.

Rey, "If I could only have one gun.." was the title for a Dobe Grant article where Skeet asked Dobe what his one gun choice would be.. Dobe`s answerer was a .22 revolver with 6" barrel, a 30-06 rifle with both scope and iron sights, a 12 gauge shotgun with a 28" Modified choke barrel and a 44 mag revolver with a 6" barrel...The article goes back and forth on what and why each gun was chosen when Dobe`s final answer was a .22 rifle, leaving a disgusted Skeeter, knowing this conversation could go on all night...

I was thinking of the article Skeeter penned discussing which gun he would grab if he had to hit the bush and stay out. That's when he said the 5" Mod. 27. I believe he also said he'd use .38 brass, IIRC. He had a musett bag with a Lyman Tong Tool and a bullet mold for casting slugs.

Then you are clearly not a dedicated handgun hunter (and Skeeter's not really the one I go to for hunting material). LOL!

That is a great score, James!

Well in my research it doesnt appear many of them were either. Alot were lawmen and or writers that shot some stuff when the opportunity presented itself but really discussed the handgun as a defensive tool that could take game. At least thats my impression, then again im 30 minutes into the research haha.

You would be correct in your assumption. However, you are hard pressed to find a writer who could spin a yarn better than Skeeter. He was a master story teller and a real joy to read.

You won't regret it! He was a master storyteller and seems to have had a great sense of humor. He wrote straight up gun and hunting stuff, as well as the tales of Dobe Grant and Me and Joe. He also wrote about people like Bill Jordan, his close friend. After one overnight visit,he accused Jordan of finishing a bottle of his best whiskey, eating the last piece of lemon chiffon pie from the fridge and leaving with one of Skeeters Colt SAA's before Skeeter got out of bed! We'll never know how true they were, but the stories were some of the most entertaining writing ever IMHO.

If you're interested in learning more about some of these guys pick up a copy of the book Hunting for Handgunners by Larry Kelly and JD Jones. A lot of good info in there as well as a couple members of HHM too.

Yes.... While Skelton did not have the impressive amount of handgun kills when compared to some of today`s handgunner`s, he certainly had his foot in the door...However, that`s a small portion of what he and his writing were all about.. Many years ago I would get my monthly issue of Shooting Times magazine and there would be a new article by Skelton about this handgun or that.. He along with other good writers of the day were something to look forward to reading, which is why I`ve cancelled my subscription to Gun`s & Ammo and Shooting Times, because there`s nothing interesting... While Skeeter was no Larry Kelly or Mark Hampton, with the places they`ve hunted and the game they have taken, he still won the bronze Outstanding American Handgunner Award and I`am sure we all know about that ..

Well said and great points James! He was a major influence on many people. That letter you printed alone acknowledged that a review of the book by Skeeter alone would sell more copies than a printed ad.

Im interested in looking at some of those old books. In nearly every facet of my hobbies theres some great info and nostalgia in them. We thankfully have had some really really excellent books out in the last few years. Prasac, taffin and mark hampton have great books w the last prasac book standing out for me. Have to check the older ones out!

Skeeter was a huge influence in my interest in handguns. He was the reason my first gun rag subscription was to Shooting Times. I always read his column and articles first.

It took me several years to get them, but I had to have a Colt SAA, and 5" M27, and a 7.5" Flat Top 44.

It would be hard to pick my favorite Skeeter articles...
