As of yesterday evening, I have officially taken a deer with everything from a .22cal to a .50cal centerfire cartridge!

I used my new .500 S&W barrel from MGM on my Encore Pistol to take a management doe with a 440gr WFN-GC bullet from Matt's Bullets.

This is my Mouse Fart Load using 12gr of Trail Boss at 895 fps. Not my most accurate load (which came back to bit me) but, I had the loads and wanted to try them for science before I loaded up full bore ammo. Accuracy is about 3" at 50 yards and I thought that good enough if I kept the shot under 75 yards. I am here to tell you...........if you think "hitting a paper plate" or "Minute of Deer" is acceptable hunting accuracy..........well..........we must agree to disagree.

Anyway.........I set up in a pasture blind and put out some corn to get the deer inside of 75 yards.

Deer started to come out and before I knew it, I had about 20-30 of them around me out to 100 yards or so.

Here is a button buck standing at 67 yards and about my max distance I was going to be willing to shoot.

I glassed around, trying to pick the most mature doe and finally had her at 54 yards. Started the video and aimed in on her as she stood broadside. Resting on the sand bag, I had a perfectly stable platform. Aiming high on the shoulder to put a round through her scapula, I sent the bullet on it's way..........and could have sworn I saw the bullet in flight!!! On impact, the doe's back legs folded and she dropped to the ground! Wait! That's not where I was aiming!!! I could see the entrance wound towards the back half of her ribs and a tad higher than I wanted. But, she fell over anyway and began spinning around on the ground. Thinking, I was going to need another round.........I started digging through my pockets. Another crap!!! I'd left my other ammo in my truck! For a minute, I thought I was going to be chasing down a deer with my knife. But, she only made two rotations on the ground and lay still.........expired. Seems the shot was good enough after all.

Science to follow.

Congratulations! Great pictures. I guess with a .50 an imperfect shot is a little less imperfect than with a smaller caliber.

So, after taking one with every caliber, what would be your favorite deer caliber?

It definitely afforded a satisfactory result. Different than an almost identical shot I made with a .308 Win on a deer earlier this year. I?ll get into that on the science part in a bit.

Favorite deer cartridge? All of them, of course. I want them all.

Congrats Zee on your accomplishment! Before you begin to question the load's accuracy, or perhaps your aim, consider the time of flight for that slug versus how much a deer can move in that same amount of time. Just one step could easily move them 3 to 6 inches. That barrel looks like it was made by Krupp's for the German army, awesome. Looking forward to the science part. If it is anything like my 500 S&W kill this year with a 440 WFN going 1060fps, you won't have any blood shot meat. That's a pretty bullet, I need to call Matt and get some.

This is a 50 yard group from my Encore with the 440gr Trail Boss load I worked up to play with. A very low recoiling load at 895 fps. But, not the most accurate load as you can see. I foolishly believed it would be usable still.

I aimed 1/3 of the way down from her spine and centered on her shoulder. She was broadside and still. I used a sand filled rear bag for a rest. Which, was steady as a rock. Am I egotistical enough to say it wasn?t me? No. Am I confident enough to say the shot felt good? Yes. So, poop happens......I guess.

The shot broke clean with no flinch or alteration. Unfortunately for me, the impact was a bit further back than anticipated.

Entrance.

Exit.

The low velocity, heavy bullet punched through with little fanfare but definitive results. And yes, I was able to eat right up to the bullet hole.

I?ve taken to butchering my deer bare footed. Keeps my boots (and or sandals as I?ve been wearing lately) clean.

Kinda like it.

Nah, I got video of the shot. The deer didn?t move.

Normally, I know when I pull a shot. This one felt good. So, I don?t know where the daily lays. On myself or the gun.

Maybe a bit of both?

Don?t know. What I do know is that the round didn?t go where I aimed. And the deer is dead regardless. A happy ending to something that is going to frustrate me to no end from now to eternity.

Here is the video in all it?s revealing glory.

https://youtu.be/psakH1CbnPs

Yes! You can see the bullet right before it hits her! That?s the coolest part of the video. Regardless of the impact not being where I intended.

I feel better!!!!

Just recreated the shot at the same distance and rear bag to confirmed zero

Discovered the gun is impacting a little high and a little left at 55 yards.

Between that off zero.......the 3in MOA of the load and maybe a little human error (softball)........I can live with the results of the shot. At least I don?t feel like I totally shanked the shot.

Glad you figured it out. Confidence in equipment goes a long long way.

Question...how long is your barrel?

Very nice Zee. Thanks for sharing. I don't think you'll have to push the load much faster to take larger game. Wow, what an impact.

I have the other brake finished and timed to the barrel. Wanted to take one with this brake and the reduced loads. Now, I?m going to instal the baffle brake and work up a full bore load with the better brake.

Going to do some scope swapping first.

I want to put a 4x Weaver I have on the .500 before I start the heavy load development.

Great read cool video . The 440 gr is the fave in the 500. Running them at 1100 seemed best accuracy and still manageable. Vhit 110 seemed to be more accurate in my gun. But since all guns are different trial comes into play.

That 440 is what I ran in my 500 JRH. Sure liked it. I'll be using that again on the next one for sure.
