Cashed in on an opportunity Saturday morning. Nice eating size doe. First use of a 12 inch contender with a Mike Bellm .35/30-30 modification. Used the 180 gr. XTP. Pass thru from about 45 yards with deer quartered to me. I wanted to wait but she was getting downwind. Appeared to have decent expansion and took out top of the heart and both lungs. Bullet appeared to come out of the ribs and travel under the skin for a short distance before exiting. Missed bone coming and going but was effective within 30 yards. Picture coming soon.

Sounds cool. What sort of velocities do you get?

Congratulations
Your 35X30-30 should be a dandy.
I have a 35 Bullberry which originally was a 375 Winchester case necked down to 35. I understand that cases can be made by necking up 30-30. Now days I use 38-55 cases from Starline as the parent case.
I have loaded some 180 XTP's for mine, but I have not shot anything with them so far. I always used 180 SSP, and still have several on hand for it.

This started as a 357 MAX conversion but damage to the rifling forced the 35/30-30 instead. With very little data, I used both 357 Max and 35 Rem data and worked up slowly. The 180 XTP and the 180 TTSX both really like the 32.5 grains of 3031. This is a fairly mild load and I have not chrono'ed but would guess 1500 fps. The XTP opens fine in phone books but the TTSX will open but not every time. It is much more consistent but for hunting I chose the XTP. I went a little faster/hotter with other powder combo's but did not see anything trending better. I did not have a lot of development time so maybe over the summer I can work on it.

Congratulations! Like the holster, too.

Thanks, I dabble with leather but reused a Shamrock shoulder loop. Nothing polished about the things I make, but good utility. I bought the Shamrock Encore holster but made this one for the Contender. I bought their scoped revolver holster for the SBHH. They have good stuff. I may buy another should loop from them - highly recommend them.

Others tell better stories but here is mine. I got up late on opening morning so was already flustered, this kept me from going where I had planned since the deer come early there. Almost every other option with a stand was compromised due to the wind direction so I found a place in the rocks overlooking a small flat. I found a good wide tree to reduce my outline and sat down on the ground. Doe with twins came in and fed below me so she got a pass. A second doe that seemed to be alone then came in and fed in front but was a little too far for comfort with the reddot (guessing 80 yards). She continued to feed at an angle up and across my front and at about 35-40 yards was about to get in my wind. She was quartered to me more than I like. You can see the entry between the neck and shoulder in the picture. Exit was behind the opposite shoulder. I now carry the trigger stick bipod and it is very stable. I have the monopod and it has to many degrees of freedom of movement. I usually use a bag in the stands since I added a board to most stands with a rail since seeing that here on HHM site a few years ago. All adds up to some great sausage.

You did a pretty fair job on the story.

You might try H322 powder. It should do about 100 fps faster than IMR 3031 in a handgun. Hornady and Sierra both list it in the highest velocity column in a 35 Remington Handgun with 180 grain bullets.
From everything I have managed to read the 180 XTP should perform a 35 Remington Handgun velocity. The 180 XTP in my Hornady 7th Edition Manual has the Bullet Performance Range listed at 900 thru 1700 fps. With an initial muzzle velocity of 2000 fps the 180 XTP will be down to 1698 fps at 100 yards. I suspect on behind the shoulder shots through the ribs being over the 1700 fps speed limit will not be an issue at all on shots under 100 yards.

Well done and cool looking rig.

I use the 158gr & 180gr XTP in both my .35 Rem pistols with good effect.
