I'm thinking about picking up one of the 45 colt convertable redhawks and have a question about the moon clips. They seem like a PITA for range sessions, but I was wondering if the there are 45 colt moonclips that will work. It will be mostly a carry gun and having a couple cylinders worth of working loads in moon clips seems like a slick setup.

My advice is to get one, you will love it.

The Moon Clips are easy to load by hand, and there are aftermarket loaders that work as well. I have one buried in the safe, but never use it.

The 45 Colt can use Speed Loaders because it is a rimmed cartridge, and does not use Moon Clips.

Moon Clips can be used for rimless cartridges like the 45 acp, 45 Super, 460 Rowland, and the 45 Win Mag. All of which will work in the 45 Redhawk.

I love mine, and here is a link to the video- Click Here

My question is there are full moon clips for rimmed cartridges and cylinders can be modified to allow for their use. I was wondering if those would work with the convertible without further mods to the cylinder being required.

TKCustom converts standard cylinders to use moon clips but the moon clips are for cartridges without rims. The TKCustom system lets you use rimmed cartridges without a moon clip. I am sure they could make a moon clip for rimmed cartridges to load and unload quicker...

I think I understand your question. TK does make moon clips that fit 45 Colt rimmed cases. I believe you are asking if the Ruger that accepts 45 a.c.p. moon clips will also accept the TK moon clips for 45 Colt.

Sorry I don't know the answer but would like to know. I have never had any interest in the a.c.p. in a Redhawk but agree with you that a moon clip loaded with 45 Colt rounds would be a handy carry option.

Hopefully someone will know.

Dan

The Ruger proprietary moon clips are a bit pricey but require no tools to load or unload. They came with my 45 LC / 45 ACP Redhawk and I love them.

I shoot my Model 25 S&W with 45 ACP rounds and no moon clips. Just pull the cases with your fingers. I have clips for it and when I Cary it I have a few loade in my pocket as well as the ones in the gun. Just shooting no clips

Worst case 45 auto Rim brass.

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

Dan, yes that's my question. The appeal to me of the convertible is if it can use TK moon clips with 45 colt with no additional mods to the cylinder.

TK Custom advertises that you still use regular ammunition if you wish too. The rimmed cartridges, like the 454 Casull and 45 Long Colt, have a rimmed lip that rests on the cylinder proper. They also make moon clips for rimmed cartridges. Also, if you wish to use a Speed Loader with your rimmed cartridges, that also works fine in a TK Custom altered cylinder. In end times, the ability to use more varieties of ammunition in the same revolver makes sense. I wish to have options without losing the qualities of the original set up. TK Custom has a made a cottage industry doing this.

So I decided to ask TK Customs directly.

Here is my email correspondence with TK Customs;

Hello,
I have a Ruger Redhawk chambered in 45 Colt / 45 Auto.
It came with moon clips for use with the 45 ACP round and has the recess cut into the cylinder for these moon clips.
So my question is, would your moon clips (SKU: Ruger 45LC-454-020 SS) work with the recess cut in my Redhawk?
It would be great to use 45 LC in moon clips as well, without any modifications to the Redhawk.
Thanks,

TK Customs responds;

No that gun can?t take moon clips for the .45LC.
Eli

Thats for checking with TK for me. Guess I'm better off getting a standard 45 colt redhawk and having the cylinder machined for TK moon clips

TK Custom will be a good outfit to work with. They charge for the alteration plus 10 TK moon clips for 45 ACP on a Ruger Redhawk. About $175.00 for just the alteration and 10 stainless steel moon clips. I believe a loader for the cartridges to the moon clips can be added. You should also include purchasing the tool for removing the spent cartridges without damaging the moon clips.

I understand that I'm cheap. I just don't understand $70 moonclips to replace $10-$15 speed loader. Of all the guns that I have sold or traded the only one I truly long for it's return is the 1917 S&W. Moon clips are great in there place, after you bend one and it ties up the gun they lose their appeal. Moonclips might be a bit faster than speed loaders in the world of range timers, but not so much in the real world. OF COURSE WANT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH PRACTICALITY NOR SHOULD PRACTICALITY EVER STOP US FROM GETTING WANT LIFTS OUR SKIRTS.

Everything before "but" is B.S.

For field use moon clips have a huge appeal to me. I can have a couple cylinders full of full patch loads, and a cylinder full of small game loads. Very simply to swap out between the two and now fumbling or dropping rounds with cold hands.

The Ruger Redhawk convertible 45 Colt/45 ACP could be altered to take TK Custom moon clips by sending the cylinder from it to TK Custom. Their moon clip dimension should cleanup the area of the cylinder that was made for the Ruger style moon clip. Call TK to make sure though.
