I have been doing a little thinking about a .224 build. I was thinking over all the normal Contender Chamberings to start with. The 221, 222, 223, 222 Mag, 219 Donaldson Wasp, 219 Zipper, and the newest G2 only one the 22 Valkyrie. (A new G2 Pistol Frame with House of Arms Trigger Job is for sale on the Specialty Pistol Site that would work with a 22 Valkyrie)Then the light bulb came on. I have a set of 22-250 Ackley Improved dies (40 Deg) in the loading room, and a perfectly good Encore that a 22-250AI barrel should work on just fine. Doing a build on the MGM site it looks like a 15.875 Inch, 1-7 twist is doable also. I have had fast twist AR's over the years, as well as a fast twist 223 bolt gun. I have Sierra 69's and 77's, along with lots of 80 A-Max, 90 A-max, and Berger's in both 80 & 90 grain VLD's on hand. Brass would be all I would need to get a 22-250 Ackley Improved up and running. I should have enough bullets on hand to wash the barrel out.
Has anyone worked with a 22-250AI Encore Pistol or Bolt Pistol over the years?

USE?? Mainly a Range Gun for target shooting.

I have a 22 Creed...Very similar performance in a XP running 82 grain Bergers. Would that be helpful?

What distances will you be shooting at, when you are at your range?

Ernie at our Range we can shoot 100 yards thru 600 yards from the Covered Bench Rest Line off of concrete benchs. We also have 700 and 800 yard Firing Point Berms on the Range further back that you can shoot from field positions from. We also have a Tower at 700 yards for Tactical Rifle Match's.
We have 4'X 4' targets at 100 yard increments, and Hanging Steel from 200 yards out.
We also shoot a 600 F Class Match monthly if I wanted to compete.

I think you might consider building a bolt rig that you could use from the bench and from field positions. They may let you use it at their F-Class matches if you ask (If you wanted to shoot F).
You might consider a 6 Dasher, 6XC, 6 BRA, or even stay with a fast twist 22-250AI. I think it will shoot good at any of those distances, if it is built right.
Even a fast twist 223 work pretty good at distance if the conditions are not to switchy.

I'd lean towards the 22 BR or 22 PPC. Likely an accuracy edge, and I don't think you'll see much velocity gain with the 22-250 AI in a pistol barrel over those chamberings.

My 22 Creed is running 82's at 3105 fps. 18" barrel, so I would take away about 100 fps for a 15"
If you do a 15.875 inch length, it would be a tad faster, around 25-30 fps faster than a 15" (Guessing)
Mine groups good at a 1000 yards too.
The 22-250AI or the 22 Creed really shines with the heavy bullets IMO

Even in 22 rifles in the calibers mentioned from the 223 to the AI I agree for anything much over 300 yards the heavy bullets and fast twist are the only way to go. I found out to 400 yards like Ermie said even the 223 is quite capable of good scores and can group, well. I think after that it is pretty susceptible to more influence in any conditions to keep up with the others.

I personally like his suggestion with the 6mm Dasher, it has proven it's worth, has a huge assortment of quality heavy bullets, and is a little more forgiving to beginners.

Just my opinion but the slightly bigger and heavier bullets the 22 or the 6mm offer at a more moderate speed, matter much more than lighter faster bullets do in either with a proper twist barrel for anything over 200 or 300 yards.

I also have found there is a huge advantage for long range accuracy with any caliber in the bolt action over the Encore. I would never spend the money on a custom Encore if I were intending on using it beyond 200 yards competing against bolt actions at any yardage. I have seen many try to equal the bolt actions accuracy with the Encore, but have never seen any succeed.

I spent the money a few years ago on a 22" shillen select match heavy fluted barrel barrel in 6mm PPC with a tuned Stratton action and trigger, on a bedded Stratton forarm, it chot great 3 or 4 out of 5 shot groups. One of the easiest calibers to load for accuracy, but after 30 years shooting bench rest, most with this caliber, I gave up on the Encore and sold it.

In the same breath, I have a 460 in a Select Match gull bull 14" barrel from MGM again in the Encore that I will never part with and does as good as one can expect from this caliber under MOA. I will never again though spend my money on anything for over 300 yards in the Encore, just far better ways to spend your money for those interests.

JMO and only worth what you spent for it!
