I love single shots myself.....I feel rounds can reach their full potential in closed breech single shots...their ballistics are hard to beat....the 10mm is a great deer/hog round, but that's where I think it lies....I'm just not a fan of billing it as the go to gun for larger than deer sized game....the 10mm Magnum is easily superior to the 10mm Auto. I think I'm right, but the 10mm Mag shoots a 200 gr bullet at around 1,650 fps right? The auto....is around 300 - 400 fps slower

The 10 mm mag is a bit of an odd ball round and as such suffers, along with other such little known cartridges and more than a few wildcats very little verified and pressure tested loading data. And most of that came from the two auto loaders chambered fir the 10 mag. I think a lot of it was pretty optimistic. I never reached 1650 fps with the 200 grain bullets in the 10 inch contender. Maybe it is possible but that was not what I was striving for. We just wanted to see how close we could get to the 41 mag in performance. We picked powders that were compatible with heavy 10mm auto and 41 mag loads and worked from there. I think we may have gotten close with 180 grain but if I remember correctly we stopped at about 1500 with the 200. Neither of the barrels I have had did well with lighter weight bullets. Even the 180 were a bit explosive at those speeds. With a properly throated barrel heavy cast wide flat nose bullets will take anything most hunters will encounter in the lower 48.

Any semi-auto round has a weak point and that is you cannot roll crimp the bullet and crimp it down. So extremely powerful loads of dense powder cannot be loaded and made to crimp down. The case head must remain true as the cartridge head-spaces on the cartridge head.
Rimmed cartridges can be roll crimped so powerful loads are no problem.

Good point, Jeff. Can anyone say 10mm Auto Rim?

Fair enough, Max, although it would be cool to be able to use existing 10mm cylinders and crimp the bullets. Not that the idea is feasible, let alone profitable, just interesting to think about.

I get it, but often times we don't see the forest for the trees. The fact of the matter is that there really is very little that is truly new!

I forgot about the 41 Magnum and I have shot a few of them over the years. This would make better sense than to try to make an auto do something it wasn't designed to do. I just get something stuck in my head and as Max said Forest-Trees... LOL Thanks for the refresher course, everyone needs one once in a while.

Good Shooting!

When comparing an autoloader in 10mm Mag to a revolver in 41 mag the 41 will win the velocity race in equal length barrels. The 41 also has an advantage in bullet choices. The 41 has more heavy weights. I was comparing these two cartridges in a single shot platform with similar length barrels. The 41 is still slightly faster but not enough to matter in the killing department. The 10mm mag is a neat cartridge and would be better if there were more bullet choices.

That is so true! I can't tell you how many times I've heard or come up with something I thought was cool, only to find out it was done before, or done better by something very similar.

I have a trio of .38-40's, one of which is a 10mm convertible as well as two 10mm's.

Also got one of the new XDM's when they first came out. Greatly prefer these over Glocks.
