Have any of you had the opportunity to run any of the SOLIDS from Cutting Edge Bullets? I have requested further information from them but since most of you folks have a vastly more extensive background in this lifestyle than I do, I was wondering if any of you had tried them and what might be your impression. I'm thinking of giving them a run in my 454, 480 and 500JRH. Thanks again for any info.

Cutting Edge Bullets are a fine product and a good company. I have spoke with one of them and have plans to drop $200.00 to pay them for a run of Safari Solid 160 grain 7mm bullets.

Yes, I?ve used them fairly extensively, to include a water buffalo in Argentina. They are accurate and they penetrate deep and straight. They are also costly, and in my humble opinion could use a bigger meplat. That said, LeHigh makes flat-nosed solids that check off all the right boxes including reasonable pricing. Can?t go wrong with either, but I prefer the LeHighs.

Used on kudu waterbuff a couple of times. Also on bison from 41 mag 454 and 460 along with 500 smith and 500 jrh.

Unless you are culling elephant, I wouldn't waste my money on a small diameter solid. The 7mm, with its small size and velocity potential benefits greatly from expansion.

Thanks folks, knew I would get the info I needed. Will check into LeHighs today as well. Any issues with handloading these? I read that they have to make them longer to gain the weight needed so they probably need to be seated deeper. Not against changing powders if needed (run H110 mostly).

All bullets made from alloy are lighter than pure lead because of the density differences. A lead bullet will be shorter because it is heavier. A mono-metal bullet must be longer to weigh the same. If it is too long, it must be made shorter, even though it weighs less. That is just the reality of give-and-take that goes on when attributes are exchanged for what is actually able to be accomplished.

Just replicating the bullet needs for culling elephants is all I am trying to accomplish. I bought a 7mm-08 for my son and I wanted to get some made for his round. It is my indulgence and practicality does not enter into the equation. And I prefer the bullets with a wider meplat too. But that is for my revolvers and not my rifle.

The meat won't fry if the lead don't fly.

I used CEB 340 grain solids in .480 Ruger (running right around 1,300 fps) on this water buffalo in Argentina. These are hard to beat for deep penetration.

THE AFRICAN GRAND SLAM...Heavy for its size. Allowing for lots of room for powder.. These had a TUNGSTEN insert in them. Much denser than lead.. Same density as GOLD.. No longer produced.. l think dropped when Speer got eaten by Vista 0utdoors...

http://www.handgunhunt.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/142130/page/0/fpart/1The CEB's are ridiculously accurate. I posted this thread a few years ago when I was working up loads for them in my 44mag and 475L. I once used a sabot and a 44 cal CEB Raptor out of a CVA Optima handgun muzzleloader on a deer at 140 yards. It dropped on the spot and the trauma was impressive with a high shoulder shot and a complete pass through. The wild thing about the bullet was that I later used a metal detector on the deer, and found one of the copper blades in the cartilage of it's ear!!Unless I was going after the REALLY big critters...I would choose the Raptor(HP) over the solids.
Mister, why do you carry a 45? "Because Sam Colt don't make a 46."

Well the Punch bullet has lead internally to add weight and reduce length. And tungsten inserted is the same approach as doing so with lead, but a denser material for sure. But my assertion was about mono metal bullets not bullets with anything inserted within.

It is my indulgence and practicality does not enter into the equation. And I prefer the bullets with a wider meplat too. But that is for my revolvers and not my rifle. BACK WHEN SPEER DEVELOPED THEIR TUNGSTEN CORE SOLIDS THEY USED A NASA PROGRAM TO COME UP WITH THE OPTIMUM MEPLAT FOR BEST PENTRATION AND THOSE BULLETS HAD A FP, NOT "WFN" WIDE BUT FLAT MEPLAT NONETHELESS. DO NOT KNOW WHAT TYPE OF POINT/MEPLAT THE CEB SOLID RIFLE BULLETS HAVE BUT FLAT, AND NOT TOO WIDE, OUT PENETRATES ROUND OR SPIRE POINTS AND GOES STRAIGHTER. PONDORO TAYLOR, ORIGINATOR OF THE TKO FORMULA, PREFERRED "BUFF" OR "BLUNT" NOSED BULLETS. I DO NOT RECALL HIS EXACT TERMINOLOGY, NOR IN HIS WRITINGS WAS I EVER ABLE TO FIND A MORE DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF WHAT HE MEANT, BUT I BELIEVE HE WAS REFERRING TO SOMETHING OTHER THAN ROUND OR SPIRE POINT BULLETS.
"ADAPT OR DIE". I USE ALL CAPS, NOT BECAUSE I AM YELLING, BUT BECAUSE IT IS AN OLD HABIT FROM MY ARMY DAYS, PLUS IT IS EASIER TO TYPE AND READ.

IMHO, the Punch and Lehigh are better bullets. They got the shape right.

And that is all one needs to want to do. Hopefully the little guy or you gets to shoot an elephant with that. That would be awesome.
