6.5-270 JDJ ? Range Report

15-inch Encore w/ Fish Gill Brake ? Burris 3x12 ? Warne Steel rings ? Stratton hanger bar ? Tony?s Forend ? Weight 7.8 pounds seen here.

Brass: Hornady 270
Primers: CCI-200
Bullets: 100 TTSX, 120 TTSX, 120 PH, 120 NBT, 125 NPT, 130 NAB, 130 GKHP

Accuracy: Bench at 100 yards - easily in the .5?s, on a good day I?ve done in the .3?s

By the numbers: Velocity recorded with Lab Radar
Observation: Best accuracy is found with all bullets .050 off the lands. Recoil is almost nil; I can spot hits in the scope.

Powders: While I have tried various brands, these listed provided the best overall velocity & accuracy.

Maximum velocity
100?s: 3050 fs - Powder used - Reloader 19

120?s: 2800 fs - Powder used - IMR 4831/ Reloader 19 / H1000 / N165 / MagPro

125?s: 2775 fs - Powder used - Reloader 19 / H1000 / MagPro

130?s: 2700fs - Powder used - Reloader 19 / H1000 / MagPro

GREAT REPORT. FANTASTIC ROUND, FAST AND ACCURATE. WHAT LOAD YOU PLANNING ON USING ON WHAT?

"ADAPT OR DIE". I USE ALL CAPS, NOT BECAUSE I AM YELLING, BUT BECAUSE IT IS AN OLD HABIT FROM MY ARMY DAYS, PLUS IT IS EASIER TO TYPE AND READ.

This is the first I've heard of the 6.5-270 JDJ. Is it a 270 Winchester necked down to .264" caliber?

First, good shooting!
I believe it is a 270 necked down to 6.5 and improved with minimum body taper.
My old 15? MOA Maximum in 6.5-284 shot 130?s a tad faster.
If you went to a faster powder, I believe you could get more velocity, if you wanted it.

Thanks for the kind note.
Based on my early wet newsprint testing at 100 yards I?ll score the following bullets as the most damage to the least. That said, I score my results noting the diameter of the shock ring, bullet hole, penetration, bullet diameter, weight retention. I score every 3 inches from impact until the bullet stops.

1 - Sierra 120 PH ? I was surprised at the massive damage this bullet did within the first 6 inches
Penetration 12.5 inches / diameter .465 inch / weight 61.1 grains

2 ? Nosler 125 Partition - Damage the first six inches on par with the Sierra
Penetration 18 inches / the top of the lead core was gone / diameter .500 inch / weight 79 grains

3 ? Nosler 120 Ballistic Tip ? Damage the first six inches was only half that of the Sierra and Partition
Penetration 13.5 inches / diameter .539 inches / weight 71.5 grains

4 ? Nosler 130 Accubond ? Damage on par with the 120 ballistic tip first six inches
Penetration 14.5 inches / diameter .514 inches / weight 98.9 grains

5- Barnes 100 TTSX ? Damage the first six inches on par with the 120 ballistic tip
Penetration 13 inches / diameter .574 inches / weight 90.3

6 ? Barnes 120 TTSX ? Only 2.5-inch shock ring, did not produce the damage that the others did
Penetration 12.5 inches / diameter .560 inches / weight 119.5 grains

I just received the Sierra 130 HPGK and have not tested them enough yet. Based on my current results I will setup for the top 3, they all impact to the same spot. My main target will be Whitetail Deer.

Thanks David ? I tell my wife all the time I need to get a really mean looking boar head for the wall? I think such a hunt needs to be in my near future!

Chance ? JD put together a series of wildcats based on the 30-06 family of cartridges call magnum beaters for the TC Encore. They range from 257 though 416. They are blown out with very little taper and a 60-degree shoulder and a very short ~.250-inch neck. I have the 280 and 35-06 version; I was looking at the 257 but JD recommended the 6.5 so 6.5 it was.

Here is a picture:
On the left is a standard 270 with a 150 NBT next to the 6.5-270 with a 120 NBT. The JDJ using Hornady 270 brass holds 76.3 of water.

Erine ? Thanks as well. The fastest powder in my listings compared to the others was A4350, my notes show only a velocity test. 55 grains with a 120 NBT ran 2686fs. I have taken the 120?s up to 2860fs with other powders but consider them hot, groups seem to widen once the velocity of 2800fs is exceeded. I settle for the happy medium of accuracy with velocity.

Thanks everyone
D.

The 6.5 JDJ has an amazing reputation on deer sized animals and the 6.5/270 JDJ beats it by over 10% in velocity.

It should serve you very well. I have had excellent results with the 120 gr. Speer on deer and antelope in my 6.5 JDJ.

Since you mentioned the 120 NBT, I will share this: Several of my antelope hunters used the 120 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip in the 6.5 JDJ and nicknamed that bullet the "Ballistic Bomb." lol

In my 6.5-284's I primarily use H-4350 with 130's every once in awhile, but primarily 140's. I do use Hybrid 100V in one of my 6.5-284's
In my 6.5-06 I run 140's and I have used H4831sc, but currently use Hybrid 100V.
To take advantage of the case capacity of a 6.5-06 Improved I would typically use the heavier bullets for the caliber.
130's through 150's (If you have the right twist)
