Hello folks.

The reason im posting is because last November I lost my home and well everyrhing I owned to the Camp Fire in northern California.

It's been a bit of a crazy 11 months and I'm finally to the point of re building my gun collection. I have a bit of experiance with bfrs and am looking to go that route.

My question is what calibre. For at least a little while it will be my one hunting revolver so while my heart says 500 jrh my head sayd 454 44 or even 475.

I find myself kicking around the pros and cons of each so much ive become stuck and cant seem to make up my damn mind.

So I thought I would ask the collective for your thoughts and opinions on a good way to go for an all around revolver

Unless you're going after dangerous game, I would say 44Mag. I know a 44M will take that too but we are talking about starting to build back your collection and larger calibers can come later. Sorry to hear you had that happen.

Sorry for your loss, that can not be easy.
If you don't reload I would say the 44, but if you do I much prefer the 454. I can load the 454 down to 44 levels or less with no problems, but if you want more power that's no problem either. Best of both worlds for me.
The BFR would be a great platform for the 454, heck for stout.

I think the 454 would be the logical choice here as far as a do anything hunting gun from mild to wild.

I am an absolute fan of the 44mag. Even if ya reload, you can shoot everything ya got and go to the local hardware/country store and find 38spl, 357mag, 9mm, 45acp, 44mag, 30-06, 30-30, 223,.....not so much 480, 454,etc. Full disclosure much more than 44 mag is just too much for me. Yes I'm a whimp. So if I need more than a 44 then I'll use a rifle. That will most likely start with 4 also. 45-70, 458 win mag....

EASY CALL, THE 454

"ADAPT OR DIE". I USE ALL CAPS, NOT BECAUSE I AM YELLING, BUT BECAUSE IT IS AN OLD HABIT FROM MY ARMY DAYS, PLUS IT IS EASIER TO TYPE AND READ.

I?m with the crowd, if you reload, go with the 454....if not, 44 mag is the common sense choice. You won?t be lacking for anything in the lower US.

It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

.44 Mag is a logical start, but there is wisdom to the suggestion of the .454. Hard to beat that one as it can be loaded from mouse fart levels to pachyderm slayer. No more flexible a round...

I am so glad to finally read this!!!!! Even if you don't reload the Barnes 250gr is not bad in recoil and the Federal Load in the 300gr Swift can still handle a lot.

Besides I have not found the BFR in 44mag to be that accurate.

Can`t imagine what you went through but the 454 is a perfect straight wall cartridge for the reloader.. It can be difficult to improve on some of todays factory ammo but with the money you save it makes it worthwhile.. Never counted the animals taken with mine but its more then a few. From Africa to Alaska and all points in between she will never let you down... picture: my ever faithful Freedom 454 and old bison. Load was a 300gr Partition over case full of 296

As a long time BFR owner..... I've owned one for over a week now! I'd say go with the 44 magnum & work your way up, what can't you kill with he 44 & do it with comfort? Here's my new beauty I just got from a friend, it came out of the custom shop. I've got about 15 rounds through it.

Definitely 6 1/2. A non Precision Center gun will actually be over 7-inches.

Does the 6.5 give up enough performance to the 7.5 to matter

All things being equal, not enough that it matters.

It definitely doesn't.

I have one in 454. I load my own so I can load it from mild to wild. The 454 will take anything in North America.
