Having an uptick in nuisance racoons it was time to get busy. I had not taken anything with my 6.5-270 JDJ yet and was in the middle of final load development for what would be my fall hunting load. I have it setup with the 120 TTSX setting .050? off the lands, fueled by 62.0 grains of Accurate MagPro, CCI200 and Startline 270 brass, these run 2775fs.
Over the past few years, I have gradually shifted towards Barnes bullets, and have been very impressed in accuracy and terminal performance. While this was my first ?live? test with the 6.5-270 I like the results. Of course, this is a very thin-skinned target.
Distance 60 yards
High left shoulder impact (.264)
1.5-inch right side exit
Internal chest cavity was jello

Is it basically a 6.5-270 Winchester Improved?
Encore?

Hi Ernie
JD will call it a maximized case Vs Improved.
6.5-270 blown out with very little taper, 60-degree shoulder, .250? neck. JD did a series of these based on the 06-cartridge family from 257 through 416 calibers.
The 270 Startline fired case holds 75.5 grains of water.

Here is a comparison picture with a standard 270 Win 150 BT (Left) and the 6.5-270 120TTSX (Right).

It?s fun to shoot, very little recoil, supper accurate!

D.

The 6.5-270JDJ was once of those I wanted to have. Never got around and now losing interest in the T/C platforms.

That looks maximized. Don't think you could get much more powder in front of a '06 case head. How' the fireball at night? I suspect it would be spectacular.

What are you using for powder? I recently picked up a 25-06 encore barrel that is my next project. I have rifle with H4381 and H4350 but I'm wondering if there are better options for the short barrel.

I shoot a lot of the Barnes bullets and have been quite happy with their perforce with the exception that i've never been able to recover one from an animal. Have you looked at the 127gn LRX bullet? Not sure of your hunting needs, but they are intended to have improved low velocity terminal performance (maybe a small boost in BC). IMHO a nice feature for a pistol configuration if you need longer ranges and want to ensure good expansion and terminal performance.

With my 6.5-284 (Lapua brass) 15" MOA Maximum, I ran 130's at 2750 fps.
The 6.5-284 case has less capacity than a 270 Win does, and even less than a Maximized 270 Win case.

Ernie - Yes 15 inch bbl plus the fish-gill brake, 17 inches overall.

Karl - for this setup I am using Accurate MagPro. I have not tried the LRX. Have not shot it at nite, not sure on the fireball.

Damon, you have some of the most intricate "TC" barrels around....they are all so different, and so cool! I really hope to hunt with you one day buddy. Any new barrels in the works?
