I was on a canoe trip recently outside Ely MN with the family and some friends last week. 21 years ago I had picked up a contender with the 45/410 barrel for grouse during late season canoe trips and woods walks (my gateway into handgun hunting). It's been many years since I connected with one on such a trip, but I got extremely lucky as we stumbled across 3 young ones on a long portage. They were tasty in the campfire jambalaya that evening. My son was also quite excited about the whole deal.

The 45/410 barrel with Winchester 3" #6 steel shot worked well. Much better then the Federal loads I had been using.

Fantastic! What a great day with your son.

I have a similar set up that I'm looking to try this year for small game. Unfortunately, it probably won't be for grouse in this state. They're almost nonexistent anymore.

I had one and shot rabbits and squirrels with it. carried it for pheasants a couple times but was never able to connect with it. mine didn't have a great pattern even after trying several loads 10-12 yards was about it. I really wanted to use it for a backpacking gun but with the range limitations decided to stay with a .22 pistol for a meat getter.

So cool! I have it on my list to try different types of bird hunting with a handgun.

I bear hunt up in Ely and have shot a few grouse with my Ruger MK II. They are tasty.

I lent my nephew my Contender 45/410 to deal with ground squirrels in his yard. Cant use a rifle due to buildings, but when mowing they just look at him on the John Deere and that is their demise.
