how many guys are still doing free range primitive style hunts where you have help with a place to hunt but are on your own for meals and animal care. There are a lot of different age groups, abilities and skills that this would appeal to and for some not so much. lets hear your thoughts

I went with a flintlock on our property a few days last year, if that counts. I really enjoy them.

yep that counts as primitive if by the weapon alone, love flintlocks, got a custom donolson .50 cal
wall tents, cots, fart sacks, cook your own meals, take care of your own game animals, sitting around a camp fire at night telling stories and building friendships. kind of roughing it instead of a lodge or hotel accommodations.
Trying to see what the interest would be for a texas hog hunt with these kind of accommodations.

Chance can you move it this to the handgun hunting threads

Both of my flintlocks (a fowler and a .54) were built by Jack Hansberry. That guys is a genius at building those things. They were both kit guns from Jim Chambers. Great guns.

Haven?t for a couple years. Last one was elk in CO. Those hunts are always the best in my opinion.

I do it every fall with a couple friends, but we don?t hunt. We bring several sixguns and spend the time shooting.

A custom flintlock is my favorite hunting rifle. I guess most my hunts are "primitive".

What I need is a wall tent and to do more camping when I hunt.

When I think of primitive hunt on this forum I think of primitive or minimalist conditions.

Last Labor Day weekend I went on a DIY hunt for black bear in New Hampshire. I was unsuccessful but I did "tent" it.

I did get a campground which was too noisy for the ambiance of a hunt but in a way that was to be expected.

So the "camp" consisted of a 4 man Kifaru tipi and a blow up mattress with three GI poncho liners for a sleeping bag. It wasn't enough as the temperature did go close to 32 F in the evenings.

I should have planned better as there are free sites in the White Mountain NF albeit it seemed many were taken up that weekend. It would have been a better experience.

I have a Seek Outside tipi, and a wood burning stove does GREAT in that thing!!! I know that's not exactly "minimalist", but man is it awesome!!! That little stove will burn ya out of the tipi if ya don't keep it toned down.

I have always dreamed of doing a wall tent pack in hunt but growing up in the extreme south ( Florida ) there are not many large public lands like there are out west to hike and camp.

Flying with a ton of gear typically isnt an option so I usually end up at a friends house or cabin.

haven't hunted with it yet but I specifically bought a Traditions Trapper pistol kit to build a hunting pistol. I wanted the spur on the grip to stop roll under heavy recoil. I relieved the barrel channel and glass bedded the barrel to help handle the heavy recoil. Since it's basically a Hawken action instead of running the normal recommended load of 40gr FFFG I'm running 90gr of KIX FFFG. With 385gr Great Plains bullets. I was getting just over 1300fps. I picked up a Lee mold for a 340gr improved Minie ball. I haven't tested it yet though. This is one of those projects that has sat on the shelf for several years after finishing the gun itself. Accuracy with Great Plains bullets was excellent and the energy numbers are very similar to that of a 475 Linebaugh. Should be a thumper when it's all said and done. I just did some playing around with changing the front sight to a large brass bead and filed a v notch in the rear for better target aquisition. I thought about putting a Hi Viz sight on the front but that would take away from it's appearance.

I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted. I won't be laid a-hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them. John Wayne-The Shootist

I used to but just don't have time anymore. I hunt between the cracks in time.

wapitirod, I have a CVA Hawkins pistol that I used to run 90grns of Goex FFG, 490 patched round ball, #11 RWS cap. Might as well been throwing rock blind folded. Backed it down to 60grns and at 10 yards I could consistently split the ball on a axe head, and knock over steel targets at 50 & 75 yards. Got too lazy to clean it so I haven't shot it in years. Got more time in my life now think I'll have to dig that old bird out.

Most fun I've had in a while was my cousin inviting me to flintlock hunt during the late PA season last year. The only thing primitive was the choice of weapons but we had a great time.

I picked up a Traditions Trapper flintlock pistol for next year. Probably split time between that and my Renegade. Already looking forward to next season.

In the circles i run with we refer to that simply as tent camping, not primitive camping or hunting.
It's my preference! Actually, it's all I've ever known.
