what am i going to gain by going from a 7-08 to a 280 AI in a 15" barrel? I know several of you have both in similar guns. Is there enough difference for a rechamber if you are going to keep your shots under 400 yards. currently shooting a 140 vld berger at 2614 fps.
Thanks
Dave

Guessing 200-250 fps faster
My 280AI has a 17" barrel and is running 140AB's (factory Ammo) at 2961. Even if I subtracted 35 feet per second times two for a 2 " shorter barrel, it would be running about 2890 fps.
That is significant, and I would want a Berger to be doing at least 2000 fps impact velocity.

thanks Ernie, is that factory recommendation for 140 bergers impact velocity of 2000 fps. I notice that you shoot alot of AB's do they expand at quite a lower velocity?

I have quit using Berger's for hunting big game.
they say, 1800 fps minimum impact velocity, but when Aaron Davidson was using them at Gunwerks, they determined that 2000 fps was the minimum impact velocity.
They no longer use Berger's for hunting, as far as I know.

Shots under 400yds. Certainly, don’t need to worry about high b.c. bullets. Nothing a Partition won’t handle inside that range.

Partitions would do fine, as would most cup/core bullets.
I use to use the 140 grain Partition in my 15.75" 284 Winchester XP-100 for elk. Longest shot was just under 550 yards on a bull-They work.

GSD,
Is this for deer, or game bigger than that?

deer, hogs and possibly elk. I have had good luck with bergers in my rifles but have pretty much mothballed them, have a bunch loaded for the 7-08 and shot an antelope with it but it was hardly a test at 74 yards.

For a max of 400 yards, I would still prefer the greater horsepower of the 280AI over the 7-08 for elk.
I took your MV for the 140 Berger and ran it through my ballistic app and you have right at 2081 at 400 yards with the Berger.
Even though the 140 AB I have has a lower BC, my impact velocity at at 400 with the 280AI is 2214.
Just some numbers for you to consider as you make your decisions.
