Hi Folks.
I got lucky and drew an Idaho elk tag for next fall with a friend of mine. We expect to be hunting in the northern parts of the Weiser River elk zone in section 22. He's hunting with a 280AI rifle and was there last fall. I was hoping to use my striker in 308 (168gn TTSX is the plan) or my encore in 45-70 using a +p loading with the 300gn TTSX. I've got a good load worked out for the 45-70 but this is really my first time seriously working with the 308. Does anyone have any pet loads for the 308 and expected velocities they could share with a 14" barrel? I hope to get to 2500fps with the 168gn. After talking to Barnes they steered me in this direction as the required minimum velocity for expansion is 1500fps for this bullet (compared to 2000 for the 150gn ttsx).

As a reference for others. Here are the Barnes part numbers and minimum terminal velocity requirements. They usually say to add 100-200 fps to these numbers for reliable performance.
The 150gn TTSX is more stoutly made (for higher power 30 cals) and requires 2000 fps. They did say they were considering a new offering of a 150gn with lower velocity requirements.
30345 (130gn tsx) = 1800
30347 (150gn tsx) = 1800
30349 (165gn tsx) = 1800
30364 (130gn ttsx) = 1800
30318 (175gn LRX) = 1500
A few with lower fps
30321 (110 gr TacTx) = 1400
30320 (120 gr TacTx) = 1350
30820 (150 gr 30-30) = 1500
30351 (168 gr TSX) = 1500
30370 (168 gr TTSX) = 1500

Congrats karl. That's a nice area. Only a few hours from where I live.

Your buddy hunting the area previously should give you a heads up on how far a shot might be.
This should give you an excuse to try and wear the Striker out. Between load development and practice you should get in some serious trigger time.
Keep us posted on your progress.

I use 43 gr. IMR 4895 and a 165 gr Sierra sp, Hornady 165 interlock, or a 165 gr Rem core lock, 165 gr Speer sp and all shoot very well in my Striker. I have used all of the above on deer with no complaints. With the Remington core locks my gun averaged 2360 for 5 shots.

Thanks junebug!
Do you feel this was max or close to it? I'm looking at a lot of Barnes data in a 24" barrel with ~2700+ fps and hope I can end up in the ~22fps/inch velocity loss and end up near 2500fps.

The Hodgdon web site shows up to 45.5 gr of IMR 4895 but I had sticky extraction around 45 gr. and the load was not near as accurate as the 43.0 gr load. That gives you a little wiggle room above 43 gr.to experiment with. I hunt and shoot silhouette with my Striker and I choose accuracy over velocity .At 43 gr. the gun shoots all 4 of the bullets mentioned very well and is very consistent.

Have you been able to get any work done on load development Karl?
I have a 15" Encore I need to work on loads for

Not so much, High snow winter and busy with other projects. Getting closer to warm up though...
