How big a pill will a 1:12 twist 22-250 shoot accurately? I've seen them available up to 90 grains. What would be the max weight for the 12 twist??? Thanks in advance for the knowledge!

55 grain is the highest TC recommends to shoot in theirs. I have shot some 53 grain Triple Shocks out of mine with some success, I just don’t want to shoot them on a regular basis because of cost. If you want to shoot heavier bullets, buy a custom with a faster twist rate. They are not that much more. I have at least one article on deer hunting with the 22-250 that I can email you discussing the twist rate and some of the new 22 partitions on the market. It might take me a day or two, but PM you e-mail address if you are interested. It might save you some time and money. http://www.tcarms.com/firearms/chart_encore.phpTC twist rates for barrels on link above!!

I haven't used the 22-250 in a T/C but i do have a 223 barrel. It key holes with anything heavier than 55gr. I believe they use the same twist rate for the 22-250. If you get a custom barrel and have it cut for a 1 in 9 or 1 in 7 like the FN M-16 i was issued you could get as heavy as 90. But all the 90gr 22cals i have seen are match HPs'. Winchester offers a 223 load with either a 62 or 64gr soft. It is marketed for deer, i have seen it used and it worked well. But even though 22 center fires are legal in Georgia i wouldn't go smaller than 243. Your game desirves the quickest cleanest kill possible.

I agree hole heatedly Crew Dawg. I voiced the same feelings on the other post on 22-250 vs 243. However, if this is what PopeanYoung wants to do, I am at least going to offer the two articles I have on deer hunting/long range shooting for the 22-250. Both of the articles use fast twist rate barrels with premium bullets. I would rather offer the articles at least as a reference. The deer hunting article actually discusses bullet performance, EG they were shot into wet news print, and downrange energy.

it would depend on the bullet and the velocity and just seeing what the gun would like. Most likely a 55 would be the max weight. My guns with a 1:12 seem to like the 50-grain bullets at 3800 fps.

Barnes makes (used to anyway) a 52 grain X bullet that should stabilize in a 1-12 twist.

Very close!! Right now they are making a 53 grain. It pedals very nice in a water troth!
I couldn’t get the higher velocities to perform very well in “My” 22-250. I tried 8 different bullets, 45-55 grains, with three different powders. My Lyman book showed that the 22-250 did the best at lower velocities with all bullets. My barrel was like the test barrel and agreed with that data. BUT, and this is a very big but, a faster twist could change that!!! If you are really interested in shooting a heavier bullet, I think your best bet is to call MGM and see if they will make a fast twist barrel.

Any one know how to get Spell Check to work on these post? I look like a jabbering idiot. The velocity thing is why i think Winchester loaded a deer round for the 223 and not the 22-250. Its just too fast. I believe the one for the 223 uses a Nosler Partition. Well, never mind. I was looking at thier web site while typing this and don't see it. I must have picked up left over ammo. I know they made it, i remember the deer head on the box. Actually i still have nearly the whole box.
TCMan- how do you do the water troth test? I was always scared of getting one between the eyes, if i fired into the water.

I type everything in word and then cut and past. My wife stills laughs at all my mistakes!!
It is funny you ask about the water test. I started testing 22 call bullets for deer hunting. The epitome of all ironies. I wanted to see how they would mushroom. Most of them would just literally explode when they hit the water. I had a heck of a time picking all the pieces out of the water. The X bullets stayed in one piece. Two of the petals constantly fell of, but I could always recover them. They more than doubled in size in the water. The X bullets were the only ones that would even consider hunting anything bigger than varmints with that I tried. The deer hunting article has a lot more bullets and data that is applicable on the subject. It gave me the idea to try and was a fun experiment.
To answer your question, I set up a steal plate, in is nice when your parents own a metal shop, in front of a 8 foot long water trough. I started out with a 22LR and went to a 223, 22-250, 243, 7-30, 708, 7mm mag, and 375 H&H. Lots of 7-30’s. On a side note, wear rain gear. I have seen and read experiments before that bullets wouldn’t penetrate more than about 2 feet of water, armed with a patch kit of JB weld, I wanted to find out. The smaller rounds I could find about ¾ the way threw the water and would stop. The 6 and 7mm’s the bullet would come to rest at the end of the trough. They were the most constant with expansion / mushrooming. To my surprise, the 7mm Mag nor the 375 H&H even dented the trough on the far side. I was quite pleased and had a lot of fun. It was a few years ago, so I don’t have any of the experiments anymore.

Sounds kinda fun, i mite have to try it myself. I have to be careful though. Most of the time i try something, i thought would be fun or cool. I end up in the E.R. My famouse last words are "Hey, watch this $#*%". Last count was 1 hip, 2 femurs, 1 arm, 1 collar bone, 3 concushions, 1 jaw, 6 ribs, a torn scrotum, a punctured lung and both pinky toes. I am my own worst enemy. BUT, i am 31 years old and can still run 2 miles in 14 flat, do 100 push ups in 1 minute, hike 30 clicks a day on snow shoes with an 80 pound pack and still be steady enough to make the shot. Now....if i can still do that at 70+ i'll be somebody. Now i am a little confused. You said you set up a still plate. Where you shooting the plate? Did you see when they try firing into water on Myth Busters? I heard about and was told even the 50BMG fraged on impact. I wounder if they fired FMJs into the water or HPs? I just cant see a 750gr FMJ blowing apart.

Large steal plate with a hole cut in the center of it. I remember seeing something about it on the History Channel. The 50BMG was also discussed. I don’t have one, nor do I have the intestinal fortitude to try it in that experiment. And yes, it was fun.
I know it is not the same as shooting flesh and tissue, but it is very eye opening to see how my projectiles were performing. It was even fun to compare 7mm 139 SST’s to 140 BT.

My buddy's 22-250 Striker will stabilize the 60 gr. JLK Low DRag which is the highest BC bullet made for 12 twists. If it stabilizes that long ogive bullet it should stabilize any other 60 grainer, and most likely many heavier bullets with a shorter ogive. It may not shoot them accurately but it should still stablize them.

I have run plenty of Speer 70 grain RN's through a lot of deer gizzards via a 12 twist 22-250 barrel...ain't had no complaints from any of them. Never found a bullet or even a piece of jacket material in the deer. Most of them DRT. The 70 grainer is not as long as some of the .22 cal. heavy weights and I did run the speed a bit slower and I think it kills deer about as well as the smaller 243/6mm rounds. I have a pro hunter 25 inch .223 Encore bbl with a 12 twist and it shoots 60 - 70 grainers quite well.
