If any of you have an interest in going to a 1,000 yard shooting using a specialty handgun please let me know. The range in Pella, Iowa is opening their shoot for handguns. I have made plans to shoot at the September 11, shoot. If this is of interest to you, please let me know. We may have enough guys to have our own relay.

XP, I know that you specialize in Long Range Handgunning and I haven't been following the the latest stuff. What cartridges are you able to get to drive a bullet to 1K yds at supersonic velocities from handgun length barrels? I'm sure there are several but... I've not been paying very close attention lately due to a move I'm making so I hope you can give me a quick update on what's up with long range hundgunning. $bob$

Bob, I'm using a 17 inch Krieger Heavy Barreled 6.5-284 Win XP-100 shooting 140 class VLD's. Best MV's are right at 2800 fps with 146 grain Clinch River Bullets (BC just over .6). Best accuracy so far as been with the A-Max's. I will be trying 142 SMK's before I make my final decision. As you can tell I am still doing some load development. My 15.75 inch 284 Win XP pushes a 140 NBT at 2750 and I have shot it at 1,000 at Alliance NE. I am also going to be playing with a 16.75 inch 1-7 twist Hart SS 222 Rem Mag. Improved in a Contender shooting 80 Sierra & Berger VLD's. The 222 RM Imp. is not in my hands yet, but will be in the next two weeks. It may be one of the best LR cartridges for the Contender/G-2. It has already achieved MV's with the 80 grain SMK's of 2800 fps. Bergers bullet has a BC of .489. this load with the Berger bullet has impact velocity @ 1000 yards of 1374 fps (1,000 ft elev, 85 degrees). A 140 AMax from the 6.5 is going just over 1400 fps @ 1,000 yards.

xp, i'm looking forward to hearing your results with these guns. interesting stuff. as of yet, i've never loaded the extremely long for caliber bullets that need the extra fast tist rates. however i am working with the 87gr v-max in my .243. it has a bal. coef. of .400 and when you look up balistics on these things it's easy to see that you don't have to have as much velocity to equal trajectory etc. of bullets with less balistic coefficients.
Kentucky….no place like home.

XP,
That's very impressive... I had no idea anyone had pushed the envelope that far...
Too bad I'm in Florida. Iowa is a bit of a trip for me but if you have have a meet in the South I'd like to come.

As far as I am concerned I have a lot to learn when it comes to LR shooting. It is a humbling endeavor and a lot of fun all at the same time.

XPhunter, Is this silhouette, benchrest, roundball or what? I have shot one handgun silhouette match on the 500 meter rifle course but, a thousand yards is new territory. A17Shooter

A17Shooter, It is a regular 1,000 yard Rifle Bench competition (stock, light, and heavy classes). I plan to shoot in the stock and light class. I think just as excited about shooting clay pigeons @ 1,000 yards as I am shooting for group. They use the clay pigeons for sighters and practice before the match.

Sounds like the handgun shooters will get their own relay. Barrel can be no longer than 18 inches (brake does not included in over all barrel length) and weigh no more than 18lbs (wouldn't that be heavy?--Maybe he said "eight").
