I'm Jay in Houston, been here 4 years from Alaska. Glad to be warm after 27 winters shoveling snow in the arctic. Got my first .30 Herrett T/C barrel in 1976, hunted Kodiak most of my years in Alaska taking lots of deer, mostly with Contenders. Shot a lot of IHMSA silhouette in the 80s and 90s.
I'm an engineering manager, used to write for Handloader, Rifle and Precision Shooting magazines but no longer have the time to spend on ballistic research projects. Still shoot a bit, handgun hunt when and where I can.
Favorite handgun calibers: .45LC, .30 Herrett, .250 Savage, .300 Savage, .35 Remington. Biggest handgun trophy was a 45" moose....
.
Based on total trigger pull weight, my trigger finger has lifted well over 200 tons....

Rob here... Raised in Maine and now live in Georgia.. Carried an old 1911a1 or a Ruger SBH in .44 for a while in Maine while hiking and only recently got into the handgun hunting. Served in the Army for a long time and now that I don't have to carry for a living I find myself drawn more and more to my wheel gun, smoke pole and bow with training wheels when hitting the woods. Lots of hogs and deer down this way(no limit on the hogs and 12 deer per year). We have a handgun hunting challenge this year on another forum that I belong to. Took my first nice 8 point with my "new" SBH .44mag this past season on opening day of the centerfire season and hope to repeat many more times this year.

They're over populated here for the carrying capacity of the land. Average 8pt(4x4) live weight isn't but around 140lbs if you're lucky. Takes a good half dozen to fill the freezer for the year here.

Hi guys, another Mike here, but call me kritter,(long story from my navy days,) a rancher, from the Texas Panhandle. Just getting started in the handgun hunting, but I've been hunting in one way or another almost all my life. Recently started looking for a new challenge, now I seem to have a new bug. I've shot many handguns over the years, including plinking at small game, but was never serious about it.

Welcome from Oregon. Ask away! You will find there is a lot of very knowledgable guys here. I to spent most of my life hunting with rifles and shooting handguns. when I started Handgun Hunting about 10 years ago, I fell in love with hunting with them. Why I never tried it before I'll never know.

Hello all ! I hail from Las Vegas, NV. I've been reading this site and gleaning info & tips for some time now and just getting around to contributing. I sent in a pic of a hunt I went on a couple of years ago and hope to add to it this fall. I drew an Antelope tag and a Mule Deer tag for Northern Nevada and a cow Elk tag for Colorado. I'll use a 30-30 for the Lope & Mulie and a just ordered 45-70 barrel. Oh, I've been handgun hunting since 1990.
Don't confuse shooting with hunting. Shooting is a game, hunting is a sport.

I'm Aaron. I have hunted my whole life, but not very much with a handgun. The county I live in has no firearm deer seasons, so the vast majority of my hunting has been with a bow. I'm looking forward to learning from much more experienced people.

I now live in middle Tennessee after several years out west, and this will be my first year hunting with a handgun. I am a church pastor with a second job, a wonderful wife and seven children, so I need to keep things in the realm of factory (or custom) ammunition instead of re-loading for the sake of time, space and money. So I guess I will be sticking with the .44mag.
If it were supposed to be easy, they'd have sent my little sister to do it.

Pasco, aaronc53, and briarhopper Welcome aboard to all of you.
briarhopper- There is nothing wrong with the .44mag , that is all I use now days and you can kill anything on the planet with it. Although I would think twice before I shot an elephant or cape buffalo with one. But here in the USA, you won't have a problem with the right bullet. The .44mag is a great caliber to start hunting with, you can shoot .44spl's threw hot hunting loads. What .44mag are you shooting now? In the long run reloading is the cheapest way to go. If you can get the LEE annivesary set, you can start reloading for around $100.oo. You will make your money back in no time. Pasco- You are going to have a blast on your hunts, good luck on each hunt. Take lots of picture for us to see your trophies! aaronc53- What kind of a handgun are you shooting? You are going to get hooked and spend alot of money, Be Warned! LOL

rupe,
It's a New Model Super Blackhawk 4 5/8 bbl and open sights. I've got a couple of my horses for sale to cut down on my hay bill this winter, and if I move one of them along I'm thinking about getting a SBH Hunter also, but still doing some research.
If it were supposed to be easy, they'd have sent my little sister to do it.

Hello Aaron, Since you are a bow hunter, you got the hardest part licked, the ability to get close. I try to style my handgun hunting like bow hunting (within 50 yds.), but it's nice to be able to reach out and touch something out to 200 yds. (My personal limit)due to energy/accuracy loss, and that I grew up shooting silhouettes. (damn ram). Practice out in the same type of terrain that you would be hunting in. Set your targets at random distances (some half hidden by brush). Shoot 50 rounds like this, BUT take an hour or more to do it. Shoot one or two rounds, rest, walk, talk, repete.
Don't confuse shooting with hunting. Shooting is a game, hunting is a sport.

Hi all. Im Vin. I use a scoped RSRH 44mag since I moved to Cumming Georgia (North of Atlanta) from NY about 6 years ago. I've hunted public land since I have been here and find the WMAs here to be crowded with people, so I have been looking into leasing land but that seems to be expensive here too. Great website but I can't seem to find the magazine anywhere, do you have to order online?

Welcome Vin, You can order the first two print copies online but the magazine is now an online magazine. Try clicking on the magazine with the flipping pages up toward the top right of your screen and should be able to see the newest issue.
