I'm considering a Ruger single six with a 7.5 inch barrel, what would be better .22 cal or the .17 cal.? This revolver will be used to plink, small game hunt , and to teach my children with.I know the .22's are alot cheaper and I am leaning toward it, but is there enough advantage to the .17's in distance and accuracy ,out of a 7.5 inch barrel ,that would make it a better choice. Experience and knowledge is welcomed. Thank You.

I converted a single six 22 to 17HMR and I was never impressed with it, the gun shot great but I liked the 22lr/22wmr better but that's just a personal thing I guess.

First of all WELCOME to the board!
I think you should buy them BOTH! Life is too short to ever wonder if the you bought the right one. LOL<LOL<LOL
OK, I'll get serious. The 22 caliber is probably the better choice. The 22 mag really gives up nothing to the 17 HMR in MHO. I have also hear good to great reports about Hornady's new offering with the 30gr V-Max in 22WMR. The 22LR is cheap and easy to shoot. I have a Single Six and love it. The Single Six in 17 HMR is on my acquisition list but it's a ways down.

welcome rug1! I would say the 22 would be your best choice. You get to convert to lr or mags. the wmr is a lil nasty round for its size! the single six is a nice gun also! it is on my wish list as well. i have a marlin 22wmr and have taken groundhogs just over 200 yds!

The 17HMR is wicked in a rifle, it out shot any 22 that I owned. Picking off tree rats @ 200 yards was no issue. In a handgun? Not sure if you would be gaining anything over a 22 wmr. But the difference between the 17hmr and the 22lr is night and day.

Thank You ! Yes it would be nice to buy both , I am a simple man with simple needs and one of the two will be fine. Maybe one of my kids will try the other later on. Sounds like the 22's win this one. Thanks for welcomeing me , its good to be here.
