I got drawn for my First Choice License this year for the South Dakota East River Deer Season. I got drawn for a Double Tag, 1 Any Deer, 1 Any Antlerless Deer.

However my wife got drawn for her second choice, a Double Tag, both Antlerless.

With the way they have been running the season the past couple years, after the regular season (November 20th to December 5th) all unused tags turn into antlerless tags and then we can hunt from December 6th to the 12th, and then again from January 1st to the 9th.

I was so happy I just had to tell someone.

Just got my doe tags here in PA...that makes three tags for me...one antlered and two antlerless. Now I just gotta decide what I'll be slinging copper with. I lent out my usual first day companion, the .338JDJ#2 so this year will be the first in a few that I need to pick a new first day toy. Thinking the .338 OTTR Savage Striker by On Target Technologies but that's only of I don't get the .270 OTTR going in time. The 30-30AI also needs to see some hair so it's a good possibility.....decisions, decisions!!

After the first deer hits the ground I'll usually switch to another rig just so none of them get jealous. But really for that to happen the season would need to be five months long and I'd need about 50 tags!!

cool dude! now ya can whack a big ol monster buck for the wall, and a couple does for the freezer.

we buy our tags at most local stores. two tags each time. the first has an anydeer tag, and an antlerless tag. if ya need more, you can purchase two more antlerless tags, for a total of 4 deer limit. only one buck allowed.

all right dan........you are under arrest! ....the charge .......witholding information.

you ain't told us squat about no .338OTTR, and .270OTTR.
we have been sadly neglected!

my 7-08 has really been gettin jealous!.......and now the .243 is wantin "first blood"!..........whats a man to do with a 30-30AI always jerkin on his shirt tail........"take me"...."take me". dang barrels!.....can't please em fer nuthin.

Drawing a Any Deer Tag in South Dakota is the trick. We have a drawing for everything, and there are usually lots of antlerless tags left after the first drawing every year. Currently there are 57 Single antlerless tags left and 70 double antlerless tags (140) left for the second drawing.

Thanks guys, I do feel like I won the lottery since I have just had antlerless tags for a couple years now.

Dan I really don't know what to tell you about your situation, well except maybe that you gotta start hunting more states.

I would really like to start hunting more states but that can be a little tough. But if I only knew of other handgunners in other states.....hhhmmmmmm!! It's 1153 miles to Rosholt, SD and 330 miles to Greenup, KY...I think I know some folk that live in those areas and the license fees seem reasonable.

Well Brother Dan, if South Dakota wasn't so difficult to get tags for for Non Residents you'd be more than welcome any time, but you knew that already.

However I think we need to move out west and have ole PJ adopt us with the great photos of the Black Bears and now the Cat that keep getting in the way of his handguns.

come on down dan!...we'll do sumthin...even if it's wrong
across the river, in Ohio, there is some really big bucks taken ocassionally. thats outta state for both of us, but driveable distance. there are areas here that have some good bucks also. i usually stick close to home, and just hunt hopin to luck on to a good buck, and, or pop a good doe to supply the freezer.

Horns...I don't need no stinking horns!! They only get in the way when dragging out all the meat behind them. I think OH has some funny "straight wall only" reg for handguns. I could be wrong but iot may be something to look into before thinking about that as a location.

Just checked...they require at least a 5" barrel and straight wall cartridge at least .357" in bore diameter. I've still got plenty of barrels that fit these requirements.

i've never hunted ohio.....i've always been too broke, or too tight to spend the money to hunt out of state. a buddy of mine hunts ohio every year, and does pretty good takin "horns". there is quite a bit of public national forest to hunt just across the river from me. $125 or more for tags though. i'm thinkin they raised prices from that
yep, ohio is straightwall case restricted.
there are plenty of does right around here. last couple years, i havn't strayed over a mile from home, and if ya stand on the hill......might even see my house . don't really even have to do much scouting

might be "too easy" for ya

could probably house you right here in my meager accomodations. 1991 14x80 mobile home. gosh i need to build me a house er sumthin.

I would not know how to hunt in warmer weather with a gun. What the temps like in hunting season?? The last two years up here it's been between -10 and 30 degrees. Anything warmer than that and I might have to buy florescent orange undies.

-10 ......brrrrrrr! i might stay in the house on that one, hehehe
dang, down here ya never know what you're gonna get i've hunted november gun season in everything from short sleeve shirts at 85+ degrees, to coveralls, with layers underneath at high teens to low 20's. ocasional rain, and snow.

i'd say typically 25-30 degree mornings, and 45-65 degree middays.

i'm not that tough....i usually get "pretty cold" in early morning every season...........well, i don't actually get very pretty.....just cold.
doubt if i'll have extra money to hunt ohio this year, but i'm prepared if i do ever get to. got the 44mag redhawk, and 14" 44mag contender.

just say the word dan. i'll try to prepare better, if ya take a notion. i've been kinnda laid back in my hunting the last few years. havn't even hunted out of a stand the last two seasons.

flourescent orange undies........hmmmm interesting
