I!!! Hello everyone. My name is Knute and I've been hunting with handguns since I was a teenager. I started using handguns for big game exclusively about 15 years ago. I started out in my early teens when my father taught me how to shoot his S&W .357. At that time I hunted small game with a Colt New Frontier Buntline (7-1/2 inch barrel) 22. Great little gun. Bagged alot of squirrel and even a few pheasant on the ground as they came into the cedars to roost in the evening. Lots of neat memories but I'll try not to go on and bore everyone. 15 years ago I started hunting deer with a TC Contender in 30 herret and also a 10 inch barrel in 7/30 Waters with a Burris 1.5x4. After hunting groundhogs with it all summer it started malfunctioning just 3 days before buck season. It wouldn't lock up. Sent it back to the factory and used my Dad's old .357 to take a 4 point at just over 50 yards (hit in the lungs and went 20 yds before dropping). Don't flame me but I found I was more comfortable going back to the N frame Smith than the bulkier scoped gun. Besides, the type of woods I hunt in I rarely have a shot over 75 yds so I traded the Contender in on a (1991) S&W 629-3 and thats what I've been using ever since. I use Federal 180 grain hollow points as they group extremely well. I do want to go to a heavier bullet because I think they expand a little too quick IMO for a quartering away shot on deer. Fortunately my shots have been broadside so far. I really enjoy this forum and ya'll seem like a great bunch of handgunners.

I!! Well for starters I got my pistol permit as soon as I turned 21. I bought a Dan Wesson in 357 Max, and killed 2 deer with it that year. I was hooked! I put away all the long guns and never looked back. Over the years I've collected quite a few revolvers and deer. Two years ago I finally got the room and time to start reloading. I have a lot to learn but love every minute of it. Last spring I got an XP in 221 FB and have gotten serious on woodchuck hunting again.

I got me a 4inch Colt Python that my Granddad gave to me, he used to carry it when he was a sheriff's deputy, even got his old badge. It likes 158gr cast lead bullets, and it doesn't seem to be fussy about what kind. When i was able to stay well practiced, i could keep all 6 shots in the head of a small B-27 target at 25yds, offhand (no bs). I look forward to bagging a deer with it, i have a few hundred LSWCHPs that are begging to be used.

Next is the newest member of my family, my Ruger SBH.
7-1/2" barrel and Burris 2x scope. Haven't been able to shoot it much. I'm hoping that i will be able to get some dies sometime in the future for it, that .44mag ammo is expensive, not like my 9mm, $10 for 100rds at wally world. It should be very accurate, i shot it father's day weekend with my dad, and we both loved it (well, i did, he didnt liek the blast, or the recoil...). It was much more accurate than we were, but i added a Belt Mountain base pin, so that should tighten things up a little bit. Very anxious to reload it and use it for deer. I was able to get 250 300gr swc's that i'm itching to try.

Me and my wife just moved up here to SE Michigan, so i'm just hoping that i'll get a chance to go hunting this fall.
We'll see, but if i dont get to kill something this fall, i'm going to go nuts, i cant remember a year that i didnt go hunting since i was 11, wow, 11yrs of straight hunting. We'll see, i just hope my job interview tomorow pans out tomorow.

Jeremy

This roll call's a good idea KYODE, I enjoy reading about the other handgunners we share our little world with. Here's my story.

Grew up hunting the woods of Louisiana with surplus WWII rifles I could buy cheap at local gun shows. Dad had a 22 pistol that I was a crack shot with. I stopped hunting for 16 years, when I was an Army officer on active duty, they keep you pretty busy. Three years ago, comfortably settled back home in Louisiana, I started hunting again. Two years went by with a rifle, but always wanted a pistol to shoot deer with. Last January I went a little crazy, according to my wife and friends. Bought an Encore frame and to date have collected four barrels. They are: 15" 240 Weatherby Bullberry, 12" 44 mag TC factory, 16.5" 300WM TC factory cut-down, and 15" 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser from Fox Ridge.

I'll never look back. Love the handguns more than I ever loved rifles. I have children that are soon approaching shooting age, can't wait to teach them to handgun hunt.
One last thing, I don't post as much as lots of guys, but I do enjoy reading ya'lls posts; I log-on every day to read what's up.

6.5x55 Swede.....and that's all I nede.
Hard-luck huntin' in Louisiana. Chris

I'm from Southeast PA. and have always enjoyed handguns much more than rifles, so handgun hunting was a natural for me. I'm really more of a double action revolver fan than anything, but I do own a Contender. As soon as I turned 21 I bought a 4" Colt python and have been hooked on Colts ever since. However with Colt all but out of the handgun manufacturing business, their handguns have gotten pretty pricey. Now I find myself considering Smith and Wesson rather than Colt. Unfortunately as the kids grew up I found too little time for the handguns and foolishly sold them off. Worse yet, I hunted with a rifle. (Thank goodness for archery season.) Anyhow, now that the kids are grown, I'm trying to accumulate a collection of what I consider to be "must own" handguns to pass on to them.

i have hunted since i was about 12 years old. hunted a lot of squirrels years ago, and the ocassional rabbit and grouse. in my late teens, i started hunting deer with a rifle. dads old .303 british was the first "deer gun" i ever packed into the woods.
in 1986 i bought my OWN first "deer gun". it's a 7 1/2" stainless redhawk in 44mag. deer hunting was a bit tougher in those days(much lower numbers than today). that, along with being a "greenhorn" meant more woods time per kill.
i finally did take my first handgun deer with my revolver, a small racked 8 point.
i hunted off and on with that pistol, and packed a 6x47 contender into the deer woods some. several more years passed, and i took deer by bow, muzzle loader, and a .270 rifle.
i even went thru a period of neglecting my natural draw to handguns. it was hard to overcome the fear of not being able to reach out with the handgun, especially if the buck of a lifetime presented a shot at extended range.

not being a wealthy person by no means, i figured if i could just get only one more handgun to do my handgunning chores alongside my 7 1/2" redhawk i'd be set. so, i ordered a complete 6br encore from virgin valley custom guns.

imediately the disease hit, and i had to have more! i traded off most anything i owned with long barrels in order to grab up the contenders n encores i wanted. i also went thru a lucky stretch of work related bonuses/overtime etc. this was a big aid in getting me closer to my dream setup.

now........if i could just get one more!........i need a big boomer powerhouse. something like a 300 win mag.....a .338-06......or even a 375JDJ.

ya never know ........they restocked elk that was previously native to Ky. maybe one day i'll get to take one close to home......gotta be prepared ya know.

love shooting, reloading, hunting, and fishing!.......but family is #1

Kentucky….no place like home.

Hunted small game most of my life and always carried a long gun. Owned pistols for the past 19 years. Seriously started handgun hunting 5 years ago. Only a doe has fallen to me bullets, but with the Wisconsin 9 day season I was thankful for that. Currently reside in Wisconsin but mentally I split my time between Colorado, Alaska and Tennessee. I own 4 handguns for hunting, a 22lr, 357 Mag, 41 Mag (my favorite) 44 Mag, 1 Contender frame with (2) 30-30, 7X30 Waters, 44 Mag and 35 Remington barrels.
This year I will be able to spend more time in the woods as the job will not be so demanding. I enjoy handgun hunting but enjoy it even more when all goes right.

I, I've been reading this site for some time now but never posted seems like every time I have a question it gets answered here before i ask it.
I bought my first hand gun about 35 years ago, bought a contender 3 years ago with two barrels, a 357 rem max and a 30-30, both are 10 inch barrels. Next barrell will be a 223 or similar as I go to Winner South Dakota every year for pheasant and there is a good size prarrie dog town on the farm that needs thinning.

I'm almost 52 years old and have hunted everything my area of SC has to offer for as long as I can remember. For the last 20 years I have been an avid bowhunter, taking a few big game animals with the compound device and even a little 5 pt buck with a stick and string, that I am very proud of. I think the handgun hunting bug is a result of that. I have always liked single action revolvers and I really wanted to take a deer with a 44 mag SBH. I have taken arabbit but the deer have been difficult. For that matter, the deer have been difficult even with the long gun for me the past 2 seasons. My old eyes dictate the use of optics and I just do not have the desire to scope my old flat top. Getting old can get depressing.

I love this site and I love shooting, handloading, and occational hunting with handguns.

Oh! I also have a scoped SS Single Six .22 that is knick named Squirrel Poison.

My name is Mike and I am 32 years old. I am married with a 16 week old daughter..I'm from Western NY State...I live in a small city named North Tonawanda...Right in between Niagara Falls and Buffalo on the Niagara River and the Erie Canal.

I don't actually own any handguns yet as I was just approved for my pistol permit in NYS on 10/4. I am hoping to pick up a Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter in 44mag for the whitetail season here in NY...I will have about a month to get proficient with it.

I hunt in South Wales, Scio and New Hudson on a regular basis...

Just turned 42 in April, currently living in Central Orygun and quite pleased with the weather since we average 300 days of at least partial sun vs the oregon coast where I did live that averaged about 40 days it seemed.
I am a lucky guy sorta,I founded Cast Boolits a bit over a year ago and have been amazed at the response by the regulars that post and the wide scope of topics we run through.
I have one Encore now and have 4 tubes for it now and just ordered 2 more,a 458 Win Mag and a 50 AK.
I have 2 SS Contenders and 2 Blued frames and about 20+ barrels, from my OTT SS 17HMR to a 16" 45-70. I believe that allows hunting a wide range indeed, from mice to moose !
I am not at a disadvantage when hunting with a single shot, like most here I am a firm believer that the 1st shot is supreme. Rarely is the time that a second shot is the guns fault time wise, handy spare rounds take care of that.

Hey 45nut, I'm guessing you are up around Bend? I was raised in Klamath Falls. Left there for Alaska in '88 at the ripe old age of 28 so I've got about 2 yrs on you.

Hi everyone. Great idea Kyle - am new to the board, so this is a good way to see what others interests are here and relay some of mine.

Was born in the late 40's at a fishing lodge in the high mountains of central Utah and grew up on a ranch nearby. Dad gave me my first 22 rifle on my birthday at age 5. Hunted and plinked with rifles and shotguns most of my youth, started carrying a sidearm in my early teens and switched to handgun hunting for big game in 1967 (single action revolvers - mule deer, elk and speed goats) and for predators and varmints a couple of years later. An uncle started teaching me how to reload in the mid 60's, but I never really got into it seriously until I got my first Contender in 1969. The Contender was my real downfall that eventually lead to owning over 20 frames and 90 barrels, many XP-100's and a couple of custom bolters I made as a smith when I had a gunshop in the mid 70's and it introduced me to wildcats. Been trough a truck load of SA/DA revolvers and semi-autos too. Big game hunting kind of went to the side for me over the years as I got more into doing ADC for ranchers, and that eventually got me really into the wildcats as well. Now most of my rigs are wildcats, both handguns and rifles, and those that are not are slowly being replaced with ones that are. For decades predator and varmint hunting has been my mainstay, and I have been making custom calls for it off and on for over 30 years. Since 2001 I've hosted a yearly 10 day shoot called Digger Wars where specialty handguns are used as much as varmint rifles, and several LJR's a year for pards too that is all night jackrabbit hunting on some of my ADC ranches.

Handgun rigs are everything from the 17M2 rimfire to a fairly large collection of the bigger handcannons, and while I do still use and enjoy some of my rifles its usually one or more of the pistolas that is grabbed most often when I am heading out the door to shoot or hunt. I shot in local handgun competions in the 70's, do the blackpowder reenactment and hunting thing, and have shot IHMSA off and on since the 90's. Also was a serious waterfowler for years as well as upland game hunter, but don't get the scatterguns out much anymore since where I live now the opportunities are very limited. One of my most fun and challenging dove hunts was with a Contender wearing a short .410 barrel - can still remember most of the dove laughing at me as they went on their way. BTW, it was very deadly on cottontail hunts though. Have also fished fresh and saltwater most of my life, but again the area I'm in now is very limited.

Am working on a couple of proprietary wildcats at the moment in the effort to continually improve my ADC/fur rigs, but do need to start scaling down as well. Have way too many that never get shot anymore and some new ones that I've never had the time to even shoot yet.

My shooting life kind of in a nut shell I guess, but I am an addicted handgun hunter for sure.

Larry

Great idea KYODE.
I want to start by letting everyone know how I have enjoyed the stories I've read so far.
Been handgunning for about 11 years now.
Started with a bueatiful stainless on wood Contender 30-30 topped off with a T\C scope.
Still have the gun and enjoy it but when the Encore was introduced the Contender became semi retired. Still enjoy shooting it but use the Encore as my primary. Right now it's set up with a 15" 308 barrel topped with a 2x7 Burris.
If I can be good enough, and Santa doesn't forget, he should have a 25-06 in his bag of goodies this year.
Once agian, enjoyed all the stories.

Thanks for the rollcall!
I'm 38 years old, married with 3 kids. I've been addicted to hunting/fishing since I was very young. Me and my Dad shared many a good days chasing whatever was in season. Dad don't hunt anymore(says he's too busy), but I never stopped. Love everything to do with the outdoors. I am the logistics manager for a large manufacturing company here in Vicksburg MS. Through out most of my hunting career, Ive used "gulp" long guns, muzzleloaders and archery gear. I have always been interested in handguning but never got around to trying it. Here in the past few years the excitement I used to get from harvesting a whitetail with the long guns has been deminishing. I will not even raise the rifle to take a doe or a decent buck anymore. With the rifle, I've set my standards so high that it's taken the fun out of the hunt. A lot of my friends feel the same way and have started strickly bow hunting. Me being a total gun fanatic could'nt give up the feeling of toteing a quality firearm. So.........this has really pushed me to the short iron world in a big way!
I did alot of hunting last year with my 3 handguns,(Ruger SRH .44mag with Weaver 4x, a SSK custom contender in 6.5JDJ with Burris 2-7 and one in 309JDJ. Man let me tell ya..... I did get a few shots at does(missed), but I had a blast!!!! The fun and excitement was back. I am hooked for live.
My hunting buddy and best friend (besides the immediate family of course) is my cousin. He is also a member of this forum as well as an avid handguner and we lease a piece of property together in the "delta" region of the state. The shots can be very long, really as far as you can see. Lots of deer and a few hogs, but really hard on a hendgunner with the extended ranges. But we're gonna give it a whirl.....
Anyway........as for short guns for this season, I'll be packing the 6.5JDJ, the new 30/30AI and the Encore in either .260rem or 7-08rem. Our shooting will be from 16' tri pods with shooting rails. Probably be long shots, so I put my time in at the range before hand. Wish me luck!!!!!
I will try and post some pictures of my irons when time permits. Would also like to say that I really enjoy this forum and getting to know everyone. It really seems like a great bunch around here!! Good luck to everyone and "Happy Holidays"

Best,
Randy Smith (JDJHNTR)

Guess I'll jump in fellas. My name is Dan Bowers and live in SW PA (little town of Armagh) just about 2.5 miles from where I was raised. I'll turn 28 years in early December...worked for DoD-IG as an auditor for 2.5 years in Washigton D.C. That's where I ran across this fella named "Gary" who is responsible for running this little dog and pony show!

Now I work as a Financial Consultant for the PA Department of Transportation focusing strictly on local governments and their road programs. I cover the most rural 15 counties in PA...it's an excellent gig!! I cross paths with a lot of little gun shops which in turn requires me to drag home a used toy now and again.

I share my home with my sassy wife, Cindy, and our nearly 13 month old daughter Sara. Also tagging along for the ride are two cats (both outside where they can earn their keep!!) and a Retriever/German Shepard mix named Shelby, who keeps the cats in line.

My safe contains way too many Contenders and Rugers that are way under used. Anyone passing through this area of PA is more than welcome to stop by and help me burn some powder and sling lead!

Hello,I was born and raised in SW Penna. and I'm 44(moved to Ohio in 1980). Been a gun-nut since about 8 when I was 1st allowed to tag along with the coon-hunters that hunted our farm. My high-school has one of the best rifle teams in the state.(yes you read it right, we were state champs 2 out of 4 years I was on it. The range was in the basement of the middle school and I carried my match rifle on the bus every day, try that on a bus today) Also a local gun collector lived near by that had a collection that numbered more than most gun shops. Spent alot of time there. Grew up shooting an old 1896 Krag and when I walked into my local shop there it was. an SSK 14" 30/40 Krag w/TSOB and it's been a down-hill battle ever since. I'm a die-hard traditional bowhunter and have killed alot of stuff over the years and recently killed the 3rd biggest buck killed in Ohio by bow that year and kind-of put bowhunting on the back-burner untill I shoot a monster with a pistol(last year I shot a buck that scored 127 4/8 as a 6-pointer!!). I do alot of reloading for myself and friends. I have the following in Contender:
22-14"
223-14"
6.5JDJ #2(307 parent case)-14" SSK w/TSOB
7-30 Waters-14" w/TSOB
30/40 Krag-14" SSK w/TSOB
357 Max-14"
375 Win.-15" Custom Shop
375JDJ-12" SSK w/full-lenght TSOB
45/410-10"
45/70 SSK-14" w/TSOB
Stared the boys out right buy buying them each SS Encore's in 209x50. I've added to their collection buying them a 220 Swift Custom Shop -26"
300 WinMag Bullberry-26"
450 Marlin -15"
I'm a printer by trade and I've been president for 5years now at one of the biggest sportsmen clubs around. Very active in local high-school sports(I run the chain-gang at the games) and I'm an officer at our local Moose lodge. This leaves little time to hunt ,but I've got the next week and a half off to even out things a little.
Almost forgot, I'm married to a some-what understanding wife when it comes to buying more guns. SSSSHHHH!! She don't know it yet but I recently snuck in a Win M95 in a 405! Don't tell her!

I'm Javier born in Texas and currently live in Colorado. I have have been in the Air Force for over 19 years and have been lucky to have lived in a lot of other places and have ment lots of good folks. My favorite assignment was Alaska.

I've been married to my "ole lady" Devy for almost 16 years. We have 2 kids, a guinea pig named Jeannie, and a new pit bull pup named Xena.

Read my first handgun hunting article when I lived in Germany. That led me to buy my first "hunting handgun", a Dan Wesson 44 mag. I currently own 4 Contender frames with 7 barrels, a Ruger 44 mag, Ruger 454, Ruger 357, Glock 9mm and Ruger 22.

Great thought Kyode! I've been using handguns (M28 and M29) since I was legally able (1974)!! I know have 9 hunting handguns, 3 contender frames and 9 barrels and 3 Encore frames and 8 barrels. I have taken many whitetails and 4 Elk with them. 1st Elk was a 4x5 with a 35 Remington Contender after reading Milek stories in the late '70's. My best Elk is my last, a 6x6 - BC 315 with my 375JDJ at 175yds. We backpacked in and banged this one at 11,000ft. 3 shots broadside with a 285gr Grand Slam. He did n't fall until teh last shot. I thought I missed on teh first shot but after skinning, we found three complete pass-thru shots just behind the shoulder, all within a 4" group. Elk are tough to show hits consistently. I tried this year with the S&W M500 but we couldn't find the Elk. Early snow moved them fast. Of all my calibers, I still shoot the 223 and 338-06 and 375 the most. I use rifles alot too, but mostly for target. I love the challenge of the handguns. Gerry.

Great idea. I stumbled onto this site looking for re-chambering ideas for an XP100, was looking to make it a Varminter of sorts.

I live in Cape Town, South Africa - so a little further away than most. Have been shooting and hunting for the last 13 years.

It was only after I started shooting silhouette competatively that I was introduced to handgun hunting. First buck taken with a handgun 4 years ago and haven't used a long gun since. In fact sold all of them except my 416 Rigby. Now there are some 14 Handguns in the safes.

Most of my hunting has been done with an 8mmJDJ. Some with T/C in 30-30 and when I am feeling like hard work there is a little Ruger GP100.

I must confess that some of the above inventories are enough to make me drool. I would definitely add more understanding fire arms laws to my christmas wish list, as it is becoming a royal pain in the butt trying to apply for additional firearm licenses (they don't understand "I just want it" as sufficient motivation).

KYODE, Great idea again. Let's see I'm Tim and I'm addicting to firearms in general and hadguns of all sorts specifly. I have quite a number of Contenders and Contender barrels from 17REM through 45-70. I also possess a few Encores and barrels from 22-250AI through 338WM. Revolver makes are Ruger, Smith, Colt, and Freedom Arms. Semi autos are Ruger, Baer, and Sig. I even possess rifles and one shotgun. I reload alot and shoot alot. I do hunt deer, but my first love is woodchuck hunting. Wish I could hunt them year round. I work hard to convert people to handgun hunting and help them anyway I can. Well that about sums me up.

Got into sp. pistols on a chance encounter hitchhiking back in '84 in Greeley, CO, which is when my current hunting partner XPHunter (Ernie Bishop) gave me a ride. I saw a brochure for TC products on his seat, and asked him about it. Since then we've had the ride of our lives, hunting with sp. pistols all over the west. Started freelance writing back in '94, and have had a few articles published concerning sp. pistol related subjects. XP and i have gotten into long-range shooting with the SP's the last several years, and applying "tactical-type" techniques afield in the pursuit of game-- a couple of which can be seen here-- http://www.perry-systems.com/what_others_have_to_say.htm#Steve

This next April or May will be our 1st long-range handgun shooting seminar/silhouette shoot, and we hope to see some of u guys there to join us in 1 fun time.

Hello All,

Rugernut here! I'm a forty year old born and raised farm boy from Kentucky. Started hunt'in when I was old enough to pick up a gun. My big game hunting started with handguns instead of long guns, just because I was infatuated with them, in 1980. Killed my first whitetail buck in "86" with a Ruger SBH .44, and it all took off from there.I've hunted moose, deer, hogs, sheep, caribou, bears, all predators including wolfes and varmints with revolvers and T/C Contenders and Encores. I've been reloading since 1980 also, and take great pride in using handguns and my reloads.

I've been a FFL holder on and off since the mid "80's" and have had the chance to own and use alot of differant handguns of all brands. But as my name reflects, I'm pretty high on Ruger's and T/C's stuff for hunting. I've owned alot of SSK handcannons over the years and still do, good stuff.

I'm hopeing to take Dall sheep, elk, goat and antelope soon, good Lord willing and the money comes in.
I hope y'all love handgun hunting as much as I do, and I hope to be doing it for along time to come!

Good Hunting and Shoot Straight,

Kennon

I live and hunt in south central NM. My goal is to take at least one of each of the following animals available in So. NM in my lifetime with a TC: Coyote, bobcat, cougar, mulie, elk (cows and bulls), oryx, ibex, barbary sheep, and pronghorn. So far, I'm hooked on elk.

I have 2 frames and 11 barrels (.22lr, .223, 6mm TCU, 30 Herrett, 30-30AI, 357 Mag, 357 Herrett, 375 JDJ, 10mm, 44 Mag, 445 SM). Want to add a 7-30 Waters and a G-2 soon. Scopes are Burris' and Leupolds.

It's a fun journey that I hope to get my kids involved in.

Two years now and two deer! I'm liking this stuff. I was bitten by the archery bug at the age of twelve. I've owned 4 bows in my life (cheap AIM recurve, Black Bear, Oneida, and now a Pearson). The only handgun I have right now is a stock S&W 686, 6in. bbl, and walnut grips. I'm still putting in the overtime so I can get a Ruger SBH. I'm also looking into getting one of the Single Six hunters for squirrel hunting. It's frustrating trying to shoot them with a bow.

Hi everyone! I've been hunting with handguns since 1979 with the 30 Herret (which I still have). Most recently I like to hunt with my Savage Strikers. Have three, 300 WSM, 308, and 223. Also have a 7mm IHMSA, in an XP-100 which has taken numerous Mule Deer and Antelope and yesterday a Coyote. Also have a 375 JDJ that I will use for Moose when I draw (hopefully this coming year). The only game I have yet to take with a handgun is Elk. Never have gotten a shot.

Hunt in Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, and Kansas for Big Game, little bird hunting and Varmints.

It is a pleasure meeting you all.

Living in Alaska I have great opportunities for handgun hunting. Really took it up in earnest about 5 years ago, and it changed me from a fishing addict to a hunting and shooting addict.

I generally hunt with scoped Contenders, but also have 2 Ruger .45 LC single actions, a .22lr/.22 mag single six and a Mark II .22. The .45 Colts are my carry gun while hunting in case of bears. As for my barrels, I currently have:
.17 HeBee (VVCG)
.17 Mach IV rimmed (Bullberry)
.22 LR match (factory)
.221 Rem rimmed (VVCG)
.223 Rem (factory)
6 TCU (factory)
6.5X50R (Bellm)
7X30 Waters (VVCG)
.300/221 rimmed (VVCG)
.309 JDJ (SSK)
.375X444 (Bellm)
.375 JDJ (SSK)
.44 Mag (factory)
.45-70 (SSK)
Think I may have to sell a few to support my other habit - old hunting books - but have avoided it so far.

Most of my hunting is done with the .309 JDJ, .375X444 and the SSK .45-70. I have taken Sitka blacktails, caribou, black bears, moose and a musk ox in the last 5 years.

My last hunt was a couple of weeks ago on Kodiak Island for brown bear and deer. The first day of the hunt I killed a good blacktail and spent five hours dragging him the two plus miles back to camp. A couple of days later he went missing from where he was stashed about 40 yards from our tent. Seems a brown bear decided he needed a midnight snack. The bear spent the next four days living within 150 yards of our tent in plain sight chewing on the carcass. Even though he stole my deer that I had worked my butt off for, I became rather attached to him, and although he was big enough his hide was rather mangey, so I passed up what would have been an easy stalk. Also passed up three other bears within 50 yards and with nothing but grass between me and them, and came back empty handed. I can tell you that even with backup, your anal opening puckers up pretty tight when a 8-9 foot brownie stands up and checks you out at 30 yards, while he is trying to decide between fight or flight. That T/C "One Good Shot" motto really starts to mean something to you then.

I am a 55 year old southern white boy. Work as a Network Engineer for a telephone company. Was raised in the country and have hunted and fished all my life. Family moved to Florida in 1959 when I was young and somehow I got hooked up with some old Fla river rats/gator hunters/poachers. They taught me how to catch gators, hunt deer, catch wild hogs (by hand), and sit around a camp fire and enjoy an outdoors lifestyle. I lived on a remote section of the St Johns River for years and had ample opportunity to learn woodsmanship and hone my hunting skills in the woods.

I deer hunt with a bow, muzz gun, and Contender 7x30 handgun during the deer seasons and hunt/catch wild hogs alive with my Cur dogs the rest of the year. When not hunting I fish and scuba dive offshore. Have a vacation home in the beautiful Florida Keys.

My only Contender is a Super 14 7x30 Waters with an UltraDot red dot sight on it. I have taken four bucks with this handgun in the last couple of deer seasons and enjoy hunting with it alot. Haven't picked up my rifle since.

I am a 49 year old teacher from West Michigan, thats way over the hill. In the summer I shoot anything that annoys me (squirrels, raccoons, woodchucks you get the idea). I have a Raging Bull .480, Desert Eagle .357, Browning Hi Power 9mm, Berretta .40. Assorted long guns that include Coly Ar15. I love to shoot. I reload all but the .40, it is to new, have not bought dies and other supplies yet. Like the forum and the info you provide.

hello guys! my real name is shane. for those who can't guess from my alias, my favorite deer slammin' implement is a super blackhawk bisley hunter in 44 mag. the only problem is that it hasn't slammed any deer yet. but maybe this year. i have only been handgun hunting for 2 years now. been a lifelong hunter and killed plenty of deer with a variety of other stuff. but was looking for a challenge and i think i've found it. i just wish that i had't put off handgunnin' as long as i did . this stuff is the greatest. as is this website and all it's members!! great idea KYODE!!

I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a handgun today.

Hi KYODE!

One Encore frame ....not enough!

3 barrels...7mm-08, 30-06, and 22-250.
3 scopes....Redfield 2.5-7, TC 2-7 illuminated , Tasco 4X.

1 S&W model 66, .357, 4" stainless, 1X Weaver

1 Taurus model 66 .357, 6", B-Square base, 4X silver Simmons

1 Ruger Single Six Convertible (I like the 22 mag. the best!)

Hope to get more TC's for sure! So far as hunting success, I have gotten one nice 9 pt. whitetail w/the '08 TC, a 250 boar w/the Taurus 357, and just recently, a fallow deer w/the TC 22-250.

More to come!!

Hi KYODE
Thanks for the invite! Glad to be here, you people have a great site. Have been a gunnut since I went into the Army at 18 am 46 now, just got my pistol permit middle of 02 wish I had'nt waited so long I have missed out on alot of fun and challanging hunting. But I'm making up for lost time now, I started hunting with my handguns in 02 and got 2 deer the first season, first handgun kill was a doe, next day was a 3 pointer. Never will go back to long gun hunting for deer, I'm hooked, its great!! Last year got another buck and doe, this year the same, not big bucks, never the lest, meat in the freezer.Handguns include,
contender 445 supermag
" 357 maximum, first buck kill
encore 209x50, 250yd kill on doe iron sights.
Dan Wesson 1911 10mm pointman,blued
Dan Wesson 1911 10mm custom, blued
Dan Wesson 44 mag 2 barrels 6 and 8in, first deer kill 6in bar. 20 yd shot. also got one at 158yds, doe.
Smith @ Wesson Mod. 29-2 44 mag
" " Mod 586 357 mag luepold M8, buck and this years hunt 60 yds
" " Mod 10,38 spec. custom target
" " Mod K17 22lr
" " Mod 22A semi
Springfield loaded 45 acp parked
H/K P7M8 9mm
Long Guns include
ar10
M1A
M1 Garand 3 each
1903
1903a3
ruger 10/22
savage 7-08
shotguns 2 each
well I've been reloading for as long as I've had guns I enjoy it as much as shooting itself, always trying to make the target bigger. its important for the hunt to be a challange for even if I get skunked, it makes me appreciate and respect the animals and the sport even more. Plus I also Bow hunt aswell makes for a nice long hunting season. Have 3 bow kills, 2 does and a 4 pointer in 6yrs of bow hunting
This year I'm hoping to get my first coyote ever, I plan on using a 7-30 waters on my encore when it gets here, I ordered it from Fox Ridge, 14in. matte blue, w/brake, well hope I didn't bore you folks to much, I'll be around.sgtrock

Hey. My name is Bill, and I'm from Wyoming. I've only been shooting handguns for a few years, but I've got the bug. I hunt deer with a Super Blackhawk in 44 mag, 240 gr XTP bullets over 23.5 grains of H-110. I wounded a deer this year that I didn't recover, which I'm not proud of. No more neck shots for me. My other handguns are a S&W 645, and 2 Ruger Mark 2's, one 67/8 heavy taper barrel, and one 10 inch barrel. i hunted over half of the Wyoming deer season with my handgun, but shot my deer on the last day with my 30-06. I'm interested in other folks pet loads for 44 mag, and hope to eventually buy a 454 casull.

Hi all,

I'm new to your site, but have been hunting with handguns for about 7 years now (mostly deer and small game) as I'm in veterinary school right now so money is a little short to buy new toys!!! Right now I have the following:
-Desert Eagle 6in. 50AE. with 10.5in. 44Mag. barrel
-TC Encore with 30/06, .223, and heavy .270Win. barrels
-2 TC Contendors with .223 rifle barrel and .22LR pistol barrel
-Ruger SuperRedhawk .44 Mag.
-Magnum Research BFR 45/70
-Magnum Research Baby Eagle .40 S+W

I reload a lot of my own ammo to save money and keep warm inside during the winters here in Minnesota. This is a great site and shows how many of us out there like to hunt the "hard way" as my father likes to say when I show up with a pistol instead of a shotgun to go deerhunting!!! Happy hunting to all of you!

Hi Bill,

I like Nosler's partition .44 over H110 as it delivers excellent penetration and weight retention on big deer (I found the best accuracy in my Ruger superredhawk using the minimum load, but that may not work for you as it seemed a little finicky when I worked it up.) I also like the Speer 270gr. FP over H110 or W296 as it does some awesome devastation on deer before it exits. I've tried some cast bullets from LBT but must admit I'm not a fan of cleaning my guns so I tend to stick with the jacketed bullets. Hope that helps.

Hi everyone. I've been a longtime (since 1983) handgun hunter. Killed deer with everything from a .357 revolver to my latest fav, a 708 10 inch Encore. I own a bunch of contenders, a few XP's, a striker and several revolvers. My biggest hobby is Bullseye shooting. If anything will teach you trigger control and sight alignment, bullseye shooting will.
I look forward to reading and posting here quite often.

Well here goes, My name is Greg Townsend, 39 and reside in a little place of Tylertown, Ms. Have a wife and 2 boys. I work overseas so I get to enjoy alot of off time in row to shoot. Have always enjoyed shooting and hunting in general. My youngest son likes to help dear ole dad reload and will shoot 22 with me from time to time, figure will have to wait a little bit to break him in on the thumpers until he gets a little older as he is only 9, the older one just dont care to much for it but so is some teenagers I guess. I enjoy tinkering alot with shootin' irons in general. I will buy a barrel to try and then move to something else. It is terrible as usually I will kick myself for getting rid of something. My partner in crime around is ole JDJHNTR, my cuz'n. It can be very interesting to say the least what can be dreamed up. I know post dont show much as had to re-register as could not find myself, so please forgive the aging mind of a wary traveler. The current toy locker of short irons includes

309JDJ 14" full rib magnaport SSK contender
6mmJDJ#2 14" magnaport with custom engraved frame by GNR
223 muzzletamer 14" SS frame
45/70 muzzletamer 14"
custom 8.5" Tactical Solutions ruger mark 2 in 22LR

Plus various long guns I like to tinker with. I hope to soon add a xp to the line up in something interesting along with one of the new 460S&W. I am sure that the locker will grow very well once you apply the need funds to it. I have not been able to tag anything of size with short irons as of yet. I have pulled the trigger on some but was unlucky due to my own stupidity in buy inferior accessories, namely scope rings. I am lucky in what I do and the way I work affords me time and effort to tinker. So to all good shootin' and keep'em tight.

Hey, this is a great idea ! I am probably one of the newest site members , I live in western Pa.and have been hunting with a handgun for 25 yrs. My first gun was a Interarms Virginian Dragoon in 44 mag, boy I missed a lot of deer with that gun. I traded it for a Magniport custom 44 mag Super Blackhawk with a 4 5/8 bl from Larry Kelly and I started to bring home the game. I also got my first Contender, a Super 14" 223 barrel with the biggest scope you could get then, a Burris 7x, what a rig , I shot 150 groundhogs the first season.
That was awhile ago, I have had a lot of guns since then,
S&W 4" model 57
S&W 6" model 57 in nickle
Contender 14" 35 Rem, 10" 30/30, 14" 30/30,10" 45/410 vr,
X-p 100 custom 14" 7-08
Ruger Redhawk 41 mag 5.5" ss w/ pro point
Magnum Research Lone Eagle in 358 Win,
AAHH then the Encore came out and that changed everything .
I bought a ss in 15" 270 Win.
16" 7mm mag
13" 221 Fireball that I put a 10x-40x 50mm Tasco Varmint scope on .
15" 280 Ackley improved,
15.5" 375 H&H mag
14" 35 Whelen
15" 300 Win mag
Ruger Super Redhawk 480 7.5 Target Grey w/ Pro Point
and my newest backup gun a Vaquero 3" 45 colt in polished stainless Birds Head,
Those are some of my hunting guns ,not a lot but they keep me busy reloading and keeps my neighbors complaining about the noise.

Hi I am Dennis and I am a new member to this web sight. I have been hunting with handguns, more years than I care to remember. I now hunt with a Ruger Bisley in .357 mag. It is a great gun. I do mostly shoot 38 sp. out of it because of my arthuritice in my hands. I hunt for small game and fox and coyotes. For the fox and coyotes I hunt during the day so I am hunting in the cover and the shooting distance is close. I'd like to say hi to everybody. Bye for now. Dennis.

Yep, another newbie but I'm trying to learn fast. I've found alot of great information here and all of you have increased my knowlege ten fold. The only handgun so far in the house are my wife's .45 colt, which I'm proud to say she can shoot the 10 ring at 25 yards. I'm about to get either a G2 or and Encore next month, with a whole bunch of barrels.

I live in Libby Montana 60 miles from Canada and 30 miles from Idaho. One of my many hats is that I am the Justice of the Peace for this county. I am an FFL with a small shop at my house. I have been in the shooting sports and gunsmithing for 25 years. I have gotten in and a out of handgun hunting twice as my son grew up and I tried to show him all aspects of shooting. Most recently I have built quite a few FAL's for different people.
Getting back to handgunning I have a 1911, a Taurus 17 HMR Tracker, and a Ruger SBH Hunter in 45 LC. My next aqusition will probably be a TC in ???. I'm getting ready for Spring bear now with the SBH.I hunt everything from tree rats and gophers to elk. I am pleased to be a part of this board you all are great guys and have been great help in finding items and fixing things. If anybody needs a good deal on a new handgun or whatever check with me and I may be able to save you some money. Fanner50 (Gary)

I'm new to any kind of posting, so bare with me. I live in southwest Pa. and have been hunting with handguns off and on since the early 80's. The handguns that I use currently are:
Encore in .308 ,7mm-08, .223, 454
FA 454 7 1/2"
S&W 44mag 4"
S&W 22 6"
and I just picked up a Ruger SB Hunter Bisley 44 tonite and can't wait to get to the range and try her out! Over the years I've taken several whitetails, a blackbear in Maine and last week I took a cow elk in Tennessee.
I don't get on the computer as much as I like so I don't get to check out this forum very much, but when the opportunity comes along I log onto handgun hunter.

TonyV, where abouts in western Pa are you from? I'm located in Westmoreland county. I'll bet that 15.5" encore in 375 H&H kicks like a rented mule! How was your deer season this year? Alot of bad feelings toward the Pa. Blame Commission and Gary Alt.

Hello everyone,
My name is Jim, and I am living in eastern North Dakota. Last month I bought a Beretta Neos for plinking and squirrel hunting between bowhunts. After blowing through 300 rds. one afternoon, I decided that handgun hunting would be for me. Having a 2 month old son also played a part in this decision...have to learn the handgun stuff now so I will be experienced by the time he gets old enough to want to try it. So, this week I bought online a Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter in .45 Colt.

Thanks,

Jim

My name is Kenny. I'm 47 and live in River Ridge (outside of New Orleans).Hunted all my life, and have taken many whitetails with bow, rifle and muzzleloader.Last June I purchased an SSK in 309JDJ(love it), and now have a 22match,223,and 6.5JDJ.I was able to make only two trips to the woods last season(no luck with the 309)but am looking for a lease in Mississippi for next year.If I can find a place to hunt I"ll fill the freezer because my SSK's are better shooters than any long gun I own. Thanks for all the great info. on this forum.

Hello all,

I'm and avid hunter. I hunt with pistols (2 XP100's, Taurus 44 mag, Taurus 454, and an Encore), rifles, and muzzle loaders.

I've been a Life member of the NRA since I was 12 years old. I've been shooting longer than that. I live to hunt and have hunted all sorts of game including spear fishing if you call that a hunt.

Anyway, I just found this forum and plan to be active in it. I've been active in other forum such as Huntamerica and Jesses Outdoor hunting.

Glenn

Hi everybody!

I have been lurking for a couple of weeks, really like the site and all the information. I have enjoyed hunting and firearms my entire life. Been reloading a long time too. Started with handguns pretty early used to take an S&W M-18 and shoot ground squirrels in my native California (Central Valley area) when I was teenager (boy that was good training). Bought my first “big bore” in ’85, a used S&W M-29 with a pinned 61/2 “barrel. I carried that on a couple of deer hunts with no luck. In ’87 I left CA. I started a career in the Army (11-B & M Infantry!) that spanned 12 years. During that time frame hunting was pretty hit or miss (no pun intended) based on deployments/assignments all over the world. I was assigned to Ft. Lewis, WA in ’98 and at that point made the decision that I was ready to settle down and transition into another career. I completed my degree and in ’00 exited the service and began my civilian career in law enforcement. I did the SWAT thing for a couple a years and I am a Firearms Instructor. Since I have been in WA I have gone after big game with black powder, and modern rifles with mixed success but always fun! I own a dozen handguns, Glocks (9, .40, and .45), Smith, and Ruger .357’s, .22’s etc... Only recently though have I again owned a .44 (sadly the S&W M-29 I mentioned earlier was the victim of a trade while I was still in the Army). With the recent purchase of a Ruger Redhawk .44 mag I am back in the game! My hunts for this fall were originally planned to be with modern rifle however I do believe I will take the .44 with me just in case I am able to get in effective range with my iron sights! Starting in ’06 I want to plan some actual handgun type hunts. I have an Uncle down in CA that is interested in hog so I will probably start there! I am beginning to look at getting a handgun that has some more range and optics too.

Hello, new to this site and itching to get my first deer/hog this year with my new toy: FA .454 Casull, Field Grade, Mag-na-brake, T'SOB mount and Nikon 1.5-6X33 scope. Shoots like a heavy load .44 mag, but MUCH LOUDER!!! Double ear protection is highly recommended. I almost forgot; I'm in Austin, TX.

Hello,

I work in the hunting industry behind the scenes sorta. My love of firearms and the use of them was passed to me from my father and I am now passing it on to my son (hes only 4 and already on the way) I am also passing it on to my daughters. I like varmint hunting most of all (gotta do something between big game seasons) But am also a big game hunter. Idream of Africa some day.

Hi:
I'm in California, and relatively new to hunting. I hunt small game and varmints only. I have CZ rifles in 22lr and 17hmr, and a Ruger pistol in 22lr. I've hunted cottontail, ground & tree squirrel and jackrabbit. I hunted with a handgun for the first time this month and got a jackrabbit. I am looking into getting a revolver in 17hmr...maybe Ruger New MOdel Single Six.

Hello all. My name is Danny, I am 25 years old and I live in Miami, FLA. I work at the local gunshop, and I am a Glock armorer. I have been hunting for about 6 years now so I am still kind of new to the sport; still waiting to get my first deer. I fell head first into the idea of handgun hunting about a year and a half ago, and although I have tried twice now I have yet to take my first animal with a handgun, although I will (!!) do it this year. I have three revolvers, all Ruger Blackhawks. Two are 41 magnums, one with the 4 5/8 barrel, the other has a 6.5 barrel. The third gun is a 45 Colt with a 7.5 tube and in SS. All three have iron sights, and since I don't reload yet they are set up with factory ammo. As far as hunting goes I enjoy deer hunting, altough I still haven't gotten one, but I LOVE hog hunting. I am hooked on hog hunting, regardless if its with a rifle or handgun, and I would hunt hog everyweek if I could.

New to this board, new to high-end handgun hunting, but not new to hunting.

I've been casually hunting with an S&W Model 41 in .22LR, a scoped S&W 629 in .44 Mag, an open-sighted Freedom Arms .44 Mag, and a number of 10mm's. But 99% of my hunting has been with a long gun; I always thought handguns were for bad guys and back-up.

So I've just acquired an XP-100 in .260 Remington. Once I get the hang of it, I have a second XP-100 frame that I'll have built to a 6.5 WSM.

I must admit it's slow going, though. I have a lot to learn about long range hunting with short guns.

Howdy Kyode, New here and looking at new Ideas for handgun hunting. I'm into Contenders but also collect others, looking to have a collection of all the single shot frame types. I'm stuck on 6.5's and .375's cause I like em and my space is small so less extra stuff I need to deal with.

I've had my Ruger SRH in .44 mag for several years, but never got serious about handgun hunting until this year. Haven't had a shot yet, but I'm having a blast! Using 200 grain XTP's for now, but may move up to heavier loads later. Currently doing all my hunting in upstate South Carolina.

As my screen name says' I live in the heart of Dixie, Central Alabama. I'm 40 and have been married to my wife for 17 years and have 2 beautiful kids(son 14 and daughter 12). I knew I had to keep her when she bought me a RSBH for my 21'st birthday. Since that day I have aquired a RSRH, Colt Python, Several Ruger .22's , a custom SA .45, and way too many long guns to last. I also love reloading , there is something about creating your own loads for all centerfire and shotguns.

I hunted with handguns for several years and have taken several deer and hogs. My largets hog was 812# yes it was weighed and it is life size mounted at a friends taxidermy studio. It went on the SCI tour with AL to Atlanta SCI and other taxidermy shows several years ago. I killed it in Perry FL.

I had my hip replaced and leg lengthened in August of this year. I love the outdoors, usually I spend my free time waterfowl hunting and just shooting o the range. This year I' headed back to the woods and plan to hunt all season with my handgun.

I have always wanted a contender and plan to purchase one real soon.

Hello, new man here. I just bought a Ruger .357 Blackhawk to tote in the woods. It's an old Pre Warning New Model with a 4 and 5/8ths barrel. I sold a very nice .44 Redhawk about six months ago and just hadn't felt "right" without a centerfire Ruger.

I also picked up one of the very interesting CZ-52's in 7.62x25 Tokarev cal. Very similiar to the old .30 Mauser but a good bit hotter load. It is an accurate auto pistol and pure poison on small critters. It shoots an 85 grain bullet at almost 1600 fps. Some factory loads are closer to 1700 fps. These CZ-52's are in the country in huge numbers and very inexpensive, be sure to chzech one out!

Hello. My name is Donald. My Inupiaq Eskimo name is Suluuq, named after my grandfather. The name refers to the fletchings on an arrow. I am an Eskimo Native Artist, creating ivory carvings for a living (my 'other' job is at an alcohol recovery center, night shift).
I've enjoyed shooting handguns for many years. I own two revolvers, both are Rugers: a Bisley Hunter and a Silverhawk. I'm looking to purchase a 22LR revolver within a few weeks, to hunt small game, and general plinking/target shooting. ~~~Suluuq

Roll call huh? OK, here goes! I'm Mike, I live in the great state of TEXAS, just outside of Houston, I'm 35 years old, I'm a single father raising 2 children, an 8 year old boy and a 15 year old girl. I was married for over 12 years but I lost my wife to Cancer about 3 years ago. I have spent practically my whole life hunting, mostly with my dad and extended family, it's a family thing! We hunted for years in the piney woods of east Texas, and have started hunting out in the arid areas of west Texas for about the last 8 years or so. We'll try just about anything once or twice but mainly we deer hunt, that's our thing. I've got a nice collection of long guns and scatterguns and am currently working on my handgun collection mainly now, there are several left that i'm sure i'll just have to have before i'm finished! I started into the whole handgun thing about 10 years ago, it all started with buying a gun for personal protection/home defense and all kinda fell into place after that. Shortly after buying a few handguns my wife and I both went down and got concealed carry permits, i've kept it active so far but I hardly ever carry. I started entertaining the idea of handgun hunting because there just isn't much challenge left in hunting with a rifle. I got my anaconda first, scoped it, and started going to the range and practicing. Let's just say I was less than impressed with my first confirmed kill with it, which led me to buy the S & W 500, I just scored my first deer with it a few weeks ago and it was all I expected and more! As far as guns go I've got the S&W 500 w/ a scope, a scoped colt anaconda 8.5" barrel, a S&W 686 .357MAG w/ a red dot, a colt 1911 45, a glock 19, a bersa thunder380ACP, a sig P230 380ACP, a browning buckmark 22, a ruger mark II 22, a Desert Eagle 50AE w/ scope, a ruger P89 9MM, a phoenix arms 22, and a few others that I can't recall at the moment (so far!) I spend a bunch of time shooting with my children, both are excellent marksman with the long guns but i've yet to really introduce either to the handguns although i'm sure it's just a matter of tme before I do! My daughter has taken a doe and a nice 8 point buck so far, she loves to hunt. I have also taken the time to introduce several female companions and many younger children to the exciting sport of reacreational shooting and hunting too, everyone needs to do their part to ensure that future generations carry on our time honored traditions of shooting and hunting. It's been my experience that if you have patience and show enthusiasm then it can be an enjoyable experience for anyone that wants to try it out. I'm known by most around me as that "crazy gun guy that lives to shoot and hunt" but I'm totally OK with that, I know what I believe in and that's all that matters!! Well I guess that's me in a nutshell, i'm sure that's more than most wanted to know but if you want to know anything else don't be afraid to ask!

P.S. Take the time to take a kid shooting!

Hello all, Central NY hunter/trapper. S&W fan, also use an Encore. I've only gotten 2 deer with the handgun, but since I started, I have left the long guns in the safe. Started bowhunting at the same time and find myself doing better(seeing more deer) with the bow than the handgun.

Bramby new to handgun hunting. Have not even gone yet thats how new.
Getting into an Encore 7mm.08 Bullberry with brake, Burris 3-12x32 on top, and a 15" 209x50 ML too.
Thats a decent start I think.
Should pout the smack down on some VT deer anyways.

I do own a Ruger Blackhawk .357 Mag and put decent groups (3"-4") at 40 yards open sites.
Knocks the hell out of a soda can at that range. LOL

As you can see from my user name I am into bowhunting. Traditonal equipment solely now. 17+ yeras with rifles and compound bows priviously.
Trading the rifles to hunt handguns now.
Thats my plan.
Thanks to all for the help thus far.

Thanks,
Shawn

Happy New Year Fellow shooters!!

I have been a member and reader for quite some time. My job and family problems have kept me out of the shooting/hunting arena for a while. This year I am bound and determined to get back to it.

I have a RBH 41mag, an Encore with a 15" 243 Win, and a Lyman 54 caliber pistol for my close range work.

I have numerous other rifles and shotguns. As of yet I have not had the chance to unleash a pistol at any game, just targets.

I hope to change that this year.

Keep up the great work you all put into this site, it is just a great wealth of information and comraderie.

Bless you all!

Burn that powder!

Hi all,my name is Steve and I live in west central Ga, I got a few 41's and 45's and then there is all the rest from 22 up. I'm 47 and don't get to hunt or shoot as much as I would like due to work demands. I've killed boar hogs with everything from 357 to 45's. I lived in No VA for years and a few friends and I would travel to Tn to hunt them every spring. My wife raises exotic birds and I own and operate an import car repair shop and sell parts on the net. Look forward to getting to know everyone here better.

I hunted squirrels in my youth with a cheapo FIE 22 pistol, but always stuck to bow, 50 caliber Hawken muzzleloader, or .30 class rifle for deer hunting and a Rem 11-87 12 gauge for turkeys. A recent surprise encounter with a big boar while toting only a .22 has made me reconsider having a bigger hunting handgun on my hip. :-)

I plan to hunt deer (primary usage) and hogs with it. I also like the idea of pistol hunting for pronghorn and elk as I do a lot of still hunting and stalking and a long gun kind of cramps my style. I'm considering options including a T/C Encore in a medium strength rifle caliber (maybe 7mm-08) or perhaps a S&W or Ruger revolver. Recommendations always appreciated.

Most of all, I'm looking forward to learning much from the rest of you in this forum!

Guns: Marlin 336rc .35rem 2x Weaver scope, Ruger P89 9mm, Tuarus 44mag Tracker, T/C contender .358jdj.

Live in SoCal...blah

Hunted deer in Maryland w/ shotgun: no success.
Hunted Hogs in CA: 2 hogs both sows one was #200 the other was #110 both were taken with the Marlin. The next one will be with the .358jdj or the .44mag.
Doves w/ shotgun.

I like hunting guns mostly not too into tactical stuff.

Will be moving to a hunting state(not that CA isnt)Texas,WA,Idaho etc. and then maybe I'll have more stories. Oh I got into hunting when I lived in Maine. Hunted squirrels, snowshoes etc. no deer or other big game...too bad.

You know, I was just browsing thru all these introductions and realized I never posted up. Anyway, my name is John and I live in Upstate New York. Ive been hunting for some 30 yrs now and took up handgun hunting about 15 yrs ago when I lived in Ohio. I am a Hunter Safety instuctor for the State of N.Y. and a Veteran of the USAF. I have 2 wonderful daughters living in California and am the proud Papa of 3 great grandkids. I am disabled now from an automobile accident 4 yrs ago and back surgery 2 yrs ago so I get lots of time to shoot. I have many handguns but my favorites are the Hunters-I have the 41,44,45LC & 22/22mag,just need the 17hmr and Ill have em all. Just want to say that this is a great forum and there are some pretty knowledgable people here. If you need an answer this is definately the place to get it. Seems like a real nice tight knit group. Good Job!!

Ijust joined about aweek ago. I have hunted with handguns for about 25 years, don't even own a rifle. I am a member of RMEF, NRA, Safari Club Int'l, Varmint Hunter, and IHMSA. I enjoy reloading and probably couldn't shoot as much as I do if I didn't.
I own 14 Encore barrels and 9 Contender barrels, my favorite is .358 Winchester.
I am very conservative, republican, and very strongly pro-gun. If you own a gun you should get out support pro- gun causes. Just remember every day above ground is a good day.

Just joined and thought I'd say hello, so "hello"

Some of you might know me from other forums, as I go by "squirrelsniper" or KYsquirrelsniper" on several other boards.

I've been shooting handguns since I was 9 (I'm 24 now), but never really got into seriously hunting with them until last year. I guess I'm getting into handgun hunting for the same reasons I started muzzleloading and bowhunting, I like the extra challenge. I still love shooting my rifles, but most of them now serve as paper punchers while I hunt with more challenging weapons.

Hi, I just joined up. I am from Georgia and I am addicted to shooting and hunting with handguns.
I have been retired for five years and am able to enjoy long hunting (and fishing) seasons plus I shoot IDPA and of course reload.
I like all kinds of handguns. revolvers,autos,glocks,1911's, I enjoy them all and have for as long as I can remember.
I will enjoy sharing this site with other Handgun Hunting enthusiasts.

I grew up in NE Ohio and was active in the NRA juniors with small bore rifle and shotgun. I was never allowed to have a handgun because of the ease at which you may loose sight of muzzle control, which was a safety concern of my parents. I went hunting a couple of times with some good friends that were not such good hunters and never came up with anything but had a bunch of fun trying.

Now I have been shooting handguns in IPSC (USPSA), ICORE and IDPA for a couple of years and fell in love with handguns. I work in a gunshop/range (Shooters Paradise in Woodbridge, VA)on Saturdays as a hobby. I have amassed a small collection of 1911's, revolvers, and single shots; some vintage and some newer to new. I have been prairie dog shooting out in CO a few times with rifles. My longest hit so far is 827 yards. I just love the handguns though and I am going to try prairie dog slaying with them in 2007. I want to hunt other creatures but I am new to the sport and just getting contacts and locations. Anyone want to take me hunting with them?

I'm a US Army Infantryman. 2 yrs to reitrement! Grew up in SW Mississippi. Went to Trinidad State in Trinidad, CO (Gunsmithing program). Loved hunting and other outdoor activities all my life. I still build bolt rifles and handguns when time, location, and op tempo allow.
My wife and I love to hunt deer, hogs, squirrel, turkey, and my favorites..coyotes and bobcats.
My hunting guns include XP100's, Ruger MKII's, and a goofy MRI that's gathering dust. I'll occasionally pick up one of my rifles when the situation demands it.
Looking forward to taking off the "green suit" and starting Life Part III.

Howdy,

Thanks for letting me join your website. I enjoy handloading and shooting T/C Contender pistols along with other rifles and pistols.

I haven't tried harvesting a deer with my Contender yet but this year in 2007 I plan on hunting strictly with it. I just purchased a new Bullberry 15" in 30-30 Win Improved. Can't wait to harvest a deer in 2007. I also shoot a 12" 357 Maximum and a 14" 7.62x39 (.308 bore). The 357 Maximum is my favorite barrel so far. I had a T/C Hunter 14' in 7-30 Waters but traded it for the 12" 357 mag barrel which I had rechambered to a 357 Maximum.

Hope I can learn alot from this forum and maybe share a little with you guys.

Hello all!

I just got my first hunting handgun though I have carried handguns for work and self defense for over 17 years. I live in south west Virginia and hunt deer, turkey, waterfowl, grouse and predators.

I just bought a pro-hunter frame and a 12" .480 ruger barrel. Have been using a regular Encore rifle frame for several years now in .308 win and 20 ga. turkey. Can't wait to learn from ya'll and get my .480 ruger rocking

Good morning everybody, I finally decided to say hi. The information here is outstanding and I cant get enough of this. Been shooting hand cannons for 10 years now and I cant get enough of it either. I have handguns from 221 fireball to 376 steyr plus .22 ruger bull barrel. The best thing about handgun hunting is that it never gets out of your system.

Fellow handgun hunters,My name is James Swidryk from New Jersey so you know that I have to travel to hunt with my handguns.I`am shooting handguns for 34 years (I`am 56)and have hunted in Pennsylvania,Tennesee,Utah,Texas,Nevada,
Alaska and SouthAfrica.I own many hunting handguns, but the one I reach for the most is my early Freedom Arms in 454.
The gun is so damm accurate!!!!I picked up a 353 Casull with a 9"barrel for those beautiful Nevada coyotes.I took my largest boar (325lbs) 3 weeks ago at a preserve in Penn.
300gr XTP-MAG`s did the job from my 454.The gun carries a
Leupold 2.5-8X in Weigand mag rings on top of a T`SOB mount.
I had Mag-na-port install a brake (wrist injury) on the
7 1/2" barrel of my field grade 454.I broke a small piece from the black micarta grips when I took the #7 SCI blesbok
with a handgun in 2003.I don`t think I can say that I had a favorite handgun hunt because it just keeps on getting better when I go hunting.I hope it never stops...........
Thanks for reading my post. James from Jersey

HI I am Brian and I use My Dan Wesson 445 supermag. I have an 8" barrel and on top sits a Burris 2X7. Accuracy is very good NO, VERY GOOD So far it likes the lighter 225 barnes x bullets and shoots them at about 1776 FPS. I am not allowed to use a handgun in NJ so I have to go to PA to hunt with one. But since my daughter was born 20 months ago I barely have time to go bow hunting or muzzleloading here in NJ much less go to PA. I haven't hunted with my handgun for years do to Time constraints But I do get to shoot at least. But my time will come. I wish I could get out of nj faster then waiting for another 4 to 5 years which is our plan to move to NC or SC or poss GA. So will see.

I have not been bitten by the handrifles yet as I love those 5 or 6 guns better. But maybe someday but right now its wheelguns for me.

Brian

Welcome Ravenman.

It's always nice to have folks join from another country. Do you get to hunt with a handgun in Switzerland or do you have to travel to other countries?

Hi Gary

Thanks for the kind welcome. Think I can learn much from the experience of the other Handgun Hunters on this forum.
Unfortunately it's against the law to hunt with Handguns in Europe. You can use the handgun only as a backup gun. But I hunted mouflon on Hawaii (Eugene Yap, South Point Safaris) with my 309 JDJ. Over the years I read every article about Handgun Hunting and I am member of HHI (Handgun Hunter International). Bob Milek was one of my favorite writers and I bought a 30 Herrett and 357 Herrett. J.D. Jones rebored my 30 Herrett and I got a 309 JDJ. Never got good groups with the 30 Herrett but the 309 JDJ shots great. My other heros Skeeter Skelton, Larry Kelly, Ross Seyfried and the greatest of all, Elmer Keith. So I keep dreaming of my next handgun hunt in the USA.

Hi everyone! Just got registered. This looks like an awsome site. I am a farmer in the thumb of Michigan. Have always liked handguns and am trying to get serious about handgun hunting with a 460 S/W mag. in a T/C Encore with a 15 in. bbl. with a Leupold VX-3. Have gotten the best accuracy with Cor-Bon 200 gr. Hunter ammo, but because of cost am reloading my own now. Also have a Taurus .45, S/W 99 compact in .40 cal. and a Walther P22. Harvested a 13 in. wide 10 pt. and a couple of does with the 460 this past fall.

Hi, just signed up, but I've been reading the articles for a while. Right now my only handgun is a T/C Contender (oldstyle) with a 10" .22 LR Match barrel and 2x T/C scope. Squirrels and tincans beware! Owning one has been a lifelong dream, and I've learned a lot from this website. Looking forward to increasing my collection of barrels and maybe getting a few wheelguns along the way.

Howdy!! A few of you know me already but for those of you that don't, I'm Rick. I live in Lawson Mo, about 45 mins or so from Kansas City. Had a TC Tender in 45-70 10 years or so back and sold it. In 2006 I got the bug to have a hand cannon and decided to go full custom. I ended up with an Encore in 358 Win Imp. I love it so far and can not wait till deer season.

so far I've been fire forming with 180xtp and 200 gr Hornady spire points over H335 in both 307 and 308 brass.

Hope to try the 180 Hornady SSP soon or the 180 Speer flat point ( I have a 356 Win in a Marlin levergun as well )

No its not a gun tripod its one that came with my spotting scope and I used it to hold gun up for photos

Howdy all,
Clem here, SE Penn. Been reading and learning awhile, but haven't done much posting. As I am in Spec Regs area of PA most of my hunting is archery and SG, but I make my trips up to NW PA a few times a year, its about a 300 mile drive, so its not often enough. Trying to find some property a little closer to home.
Still kills me I can hunt Spec Regs with Sabot Slug from a SG or Sabot pistol bullet from a ML, but I can't shoot the same pistol bullet slower from a Blackhawk. Silly rule, but thats what we are stuck with.

I'm new here, happy to be a part of this group. I'm mostly a Boar Hunter, but I'm looking to hunt other species sooner or later. I'ts just that boar huntin is so darn fun, it's hard to think of anything else. Pistol hunting is my thing, I've always had a passion for handgun hunting, you have to get very close to the action. I feel handgun hunters are the best hunters out there period.I use mostly a Smith and Wesson pistol, chambered for the 357 sig. The ammo I use is the factory loaded Federal premiums hollow point. 125 grains of 1350 fps from the muzzle, providing 500 fpe of pure power. I love it!!

Hey Im Erik from CA. Im 21 years old so Im just beginning to be getting into handgun hunting on a serious level, In the past Ive used my dads Dan Wesson .357 for various varmints. Now Im working on taking game that I would of considered easy for me with a rifle, because I want to challenge myself, get close, practice more, gain a new level of precision and most of all have fun and give into my obsession for handguns. My main hunts revolve around Boar, Deer and Bear.

I have more guns than I need, but not nearly as many as I want...

Howdy all, I'm from North Central Mississippi. I've been in the Military (MSARNG) for 17 yrs, haven't been to "Sand City" yet. I've been hunting with handguns for 17 yrs now. Own no rifles, except for T/C Encore muzzleloader barrel. Have taken countless whitetails, squirrels, coyotes, bobcats, several turkey, and a few exotics with handgun. I love the challenge of handgun hunting.(I also love bow hunting.) I'm planning a black bear hunt next fall in Maine, hope to take a nice boar with a revolver. My arsenal consist of T/C Contender with 14" barrels in 22lr match, 45/.410, and 30/30 win, T/C Encore with 15".308 win, Ruger Super Blackhawk Bisley Hunter 44 mag, and a Gary Reeder Custom 475 Linebaugh, and a Ruger MKII 22/45 for plinking. I've got a 454 FA Casull and another Reeder Custom on my wish list, but will have to wait awhile. I love hunting, fishing, shooting, working on guns and reloading. I really enjoy reading everyone's post on this web-site. (Never to experienced or to old to learn something. Not saying I'm either one.) Hope to get VOL.III Handgun Hunter Magazine one day. Good hunting to all.

Just joined up and ordered the 3 magazines. Can't wait to get them. I've been a hunter for a long time, taking my first deer with a bow over 25 yrs. ago. I took my 1st deer with a handgun about 12 yrs. ago and took my 1st elk with a handgun this year. I hunt with a Super Rehawk in 44 mag. with Bushnel 2-6X & action job by Pinnacle Performance. Great site here. Glad I found it!

Hi all - new to the site. I've been a handgun hunter for over 15 years now, but still use all methods. Primary hunting gun has been a 44 Ruger Redhawk with 2X Leupold, but Santa was EXTRA nice and a 460 is on the way!

Found the site researching loads, variable scopes, scope mounting suggestions, etc. and very glad I found it. Looks like a great group of members, and I look forward to sharing tips, trips and memories...

Sounds like we have hunted the same dirt. Have you ever hunted the trophy management area near Rocks Pond at Eutaville. Our lease is in Camden, Rembert more precise, right now. I live in the upstate.

Hello. I'm new to the forum. Name is Lou and I live in Tampa, Florida. Was a big hog hunter in my youth with a Ruger Super blackhawk 44 mag. I have had the TC encore bug for a while now and have finally succumbed to the illness! I have recently acquired an Encore pistol and am awaiting the arrival of my new 15" MGM barrel in 308 so I can mount my Burris 2x7 and get back out in the woods. Been lurking in this site about a week now and after reading some posts, I new I had to join the forum. It's so nice to find other handgun hunters.
