Congratulations, it looks like you guys had a great vacation! He is off to a great start! You might have to load his rifle with snap caps next time so you can get a shot in!

I thought you was going to set him up with 30-30 contender pistol?

I thought you was going to set him up with 30-30 contender pistol? That is correct but, it will be for this next coming season...I've got to get that rifle out of his hands, he don't miss with it...and I don't get a chance to shoot...LOL

I was figuring you were just letting your son gain some confidence and experience with the rifle before switching to the shortgun.

TC, that's part of the reason. He has got several kills under his belt, considering his age, using his rifle. I mainly wanted to let him get some handgun hunting experience on small game with a 22lr. This allows field position practice and respect for the difficulty of handgun hunting. I think he will be ready by next season.

Can't wait for my son to get old enough to go hunting with me. He is 18months old and already cries if I don't show him my deer mounts and kills. My daughter who is 13 just did not show enough interest in shooting but loves to go with me hunting. I took her to Jakes Day and game warden had kids shooting 12 gauge and she shoot it and she has been scared to shoot guns since. It hurt her finger and shoulder. I am starting her out with 22 again to gain confidence. Nice to have a hunting partner. Good luck.

It's hard to get their confidence back after they've been hurt.

My 10 year old got a 20 ga for christams he already had a 39 TDS marlin so this was a step up. First 25 shots he hit 14 clays. He is a bit recoil shy but I think he will grow into it. I am putting together an encore rifle for him in 358 Win should be ready by next year but I am not sure he will. He is about 2 years out at best guess. His younger brother (7 years) is mad his pellet pistol will not kill a hog. He shoots the pistol and rifle a lot. He may come along faster. He was pissed I bought him a gun that would not kill a hog. He wanted to trade it that day he said take it back and get me something that will kill a pig so I can go with you.
If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

Dude...that's awesome!! My 5yo daughter was right beside me when I was cleaning all my small game this year and was at my side while skinning deer. She never flinched at seeing anything...and actually is wondering why I don't bring deer home with the guts as she wants to see their insides.
I think a lot of her interest has to do with being curious and eager to learn.

Dan, sounds like she's on the right track. Sounds to me like she needs a pellet gun to get primed up!

Pellet gun? Already has a pellet rifle AND model 1377 handgun. Bought her a JC Higgins .22LR and cut it down then she's already claimed my yeller'XP .222 Remmy, Model 7 7mm-08, and a Remington 870 Express 20ga.
She's ready to start...just waiting for the weather to break so she can start shooting.

my little girl, who's 8 going on 28 loves to hunt with me and loves guns. She is fascinated by my gun work and reloading and always wants to watch and help. She now has my Crossmant 760 pellet gun, a New england arms single shot 410, a 1930's vintage stevens single shot 22 and a Rossi combo with a 20ga, 22, and 243 barrel, all hanging in a locked gun rack in her room. The one she will get in August is the little Heritage Rough Rider I reworked for her, she wants to shoot it all the time and never wants to mess with the rifles so in August when she turns 9 the Rough Rider convertible is hers.

The part I left out is if I go shooting without her I get ripped a new one by my daughter when I get home for not taking her. She would rather go shooting with me than shopping with her mom.

You guys are ahead of me. It is not even up for discussion. If it is game she doesn't do it, but she does cook it though. since I've become a house husband I've had to do most of the cooking but since the surgery I've had a temporary stay but I fear my time is growing short, seems she thinks if I'm well enough to play with guns then I can cook. Figures, it's a no win situation.
