Marlin 1895G with a Wild West Guns ghost ring sight.

If it were supposed to be easy, they'd have sent my little sister to do it.

Since my neck and shoulder surgeries I've had to get rid of all of mine because I couldn't own them with out shooting them but what I had was a Remington model 700 Classic in 375 H&H, Remington 700LSS matching set in 300 and 375 RUM, Ruger #1 Tropical stainless laminate in 458 Lott, and the one I still have is the Marlin 1895SS in 45-70 which is what I took my Roosevelt with this year. The guns all wore Leupold glass, the Marlin has a VX-I in 2-7 but I also have a XS ghost ring sight, and scout scope mount but I can't get used to the scout system. I did action jobs on all the guns including new triggers in the Ruger and Marlin, the Marlin also has the "Bear Proof" ejector. Out of all those the 375 RUM is the only that didn't take game. My hands down favorite that I miss the most is my 458 Lott.

SChunter, don't feel bad the biggest rifle I had was a 270 Win in a Reminton 710 that I won at a firemans raffle. I traded it for a handgun soon after I got it. LOL

Don’t… those big boys and be expensive to feed. My black powders shoot cast round balls but the 375 H&H gets Hornady 270 sp’s. That is also the reason I don’t have anything bigger. In fact I am shooting hard cast out of my 375 Win handgun.

Ps, the next in line after the 375H&H is my 7mm Mag, 270 Win and 7mm-08. So needless to say they go down pretty quickly.

yep Dan is the proud owner of one of the prettiest rifles I ever had.

Dan the tropical was a pretty sexy gun, kinda looked like a club but I miss it something fierce.

I am amazed that so many of us have 45-70 rifles.
Got my SS Marlin 1895 when I booked my bear hunt.
Others: 25.06, 30.06, 30-30
Hey Wapitirod, what is a "bear proof" ejector?

It's a one piece ejector hand assembly made by Wild West guns. If you look at the factory ejector it's a two piece design with a piece of spring steel crimped into the ejector hand and I guess there have been a few come apart. They aren't too expensive and I believe you can still get them from either brownells or midway and all you have to do is remove the bolt to change it.

Count me in also....Marlin 1895GS 45-70 loaded w/ 300gr Hornady HPs over IMR4198 and topped w/ a red dot. Dad has used it to drop about half a dozen or so deer.

Also have a H&R 500 S&W rifle. Never fired it...I have the dies and brass, just never bought any bullets. My Midway Blem bullet order does have some coming though...only 50...should have gotten more I guess.

Those are the only big BORE guns I have...but have many more that are big POWDER HOGS, just not a big bore.

I recently obtained a .378 Weatherby Magnum in a Mark V. Pretty gun and comfortable to handle, too. Recoil is right up there, but not as bad as the 8-1/2 lb. Mod. 70 I once owned. I cannot explain the fascination for these big bores, but I seem to have some inner inexplicable need to have at least one. Somehow, my .45-70 Shiloh Sharps and my .40-65 Shiloh Sharps just don't qualify as true big bores to me. Must be the power; I don't know.

I'm too old to dream of an African safari anymore, but I enjoy this .378 anyway.

You can get that Wild West Guns one-piece ejector for the Marlin 1895 from Cabelas as well. That, a 3lb trigger and a lever with a bigger loop, all made by WWG's. I don't have any of them myself, however. Ive been shooting the 1895 for 20 years and never had an ejection problem, and the factory trigger on this guide gun I'm shooting now is crisp and very nice. Nor do I care so much for the big, bulky looks of that big loop. But that's just a matter of personal taste.

I read the reveiws on the stock ejector on Cabela's and thought I'd better play it safe since 405 grain Grizzly +P will be sent down the pipe. Found one in stainless in Brownells cheaper. I'll keep the stock trigger.

the main thing you gain in the wild west trigger is the lack of free play that is present in the factory guns. I put one in mine just for the heck of it and it was easy enough to install and as I remember it's a one piece unit unlike the factory unit.

You guys, I didn't realize you wanted me to count my 300 RSAUM, 300 win mag, 338 (X5) win mag (I like this caliber alot), 300 RUM and 30-378 Weatherby. Heck, I thought big-Bore meant the over 35 Caliber!!

They are kind of bulky but they are very functional. I put one on my Winchester 94 because it's a saddle gun and most of the time I'm wearing gloves. It makes a big difference trying to get a gloved hand into an big loop as opposed to a standard size. I also see the new guide gun comes with a pistol grip and big loop and I'm sure that's for the same reason, in the north country where it would actually be a "guide gun" as back up for bear most guides are going to be wearing gloves.
