Well, I killed a 400+ pound black bear last Wednesday with hounds in North Carolina with forum member cottonstalk. But, due to the overcast conditions, which sent the gps system into a fritz, and the absolute impenetrable foliage, we were unable to recover the bear. Talk about depressing. We shot him in the shoulder while treed and he managed to run to another with the dogs in hot pursuit at which time we shot him in the vitals again, after catching up. Both shots knocked the bear off the tree and this last time he ran off, with dogs at his heels when he expired. By the time we got within 100 yards of the dogs, two hours had elapsed, and the dogs broke away from the dead bear as they had lost interest (which is what they do after a while when the animal isn't moving any more). Finding an animal in that mess is like finding a green BB in the grass. In hindsight, we should have simply let him expire after the first tree, but we pushed him off. Bummer. His head was easily three times the size of the 200 pound bear I killed last year. Crap.
