At the high impact velocity, the bullet caused extensive permanent as well as temporary damage to the internal organs. Hydrostatic shock was present, but not near enough to the central nervous system (spine) to cause temporary incapacitation. Therefore, the deer was able to run a short distance before the lungs/heart gave out and caused death. The damage to multiple organs (heart/lungs) as well as the carotid and wind pipe, combined to cause a rapid loss of oxygenated blood to the brain.
