I've traditionally tried to slip the bullet behind the deer's shoulder, either because they were pretty far away and I preferred aiming dead center of the chest to minimize margins of error, or because I used a rapidly expanding bullet that was unlikely to hold together after hitting those bones.

I wouldn't hesitate to make the shot if I'm packing hardcasts or Barnes TTSXs, though.
