I shot 2 whitetails with 170 gr. truncated cone leads in my Sig .40 S&W. Was not impressed. Ran a ways. Not much internal damage.
I tested a bunch of bullets in the .40 when it came out (on deer). The winner, by far, was a Sierra 165 gr. JHC. More internal damage than any other bullet tested and the shortest run of the deer. Actually dropped 2 in their tracks.
I'm thinking casts need to be a little soft in the nose area for damage, but with a hard base for penetration. Sort of like a NPT. Don't know if that's possible. I'm not a caster.
