The first coyote I ever killed is the only one I ever killed with a handgun. I didn’t own a center fire rifle at the time but I did own an S&W Model 53 .22 RemJet. It was my constant companion when I was 16/20 years old and I could shoot it. I called him in with a hand call and he must have smelled me because he looked suspicious and drifted off at an angle. He was under a hill so when I got out of sight I stood up and crept to the edge of the hill. He saw me, took off running and I started shooting. Two shots, two misses, and the third shot caught him in the back as he slowed to go under a fence. At that time we had very few coyotes in East Texas, that was probably only the second or third one I had ever seen.
